I’ve committed to going to a wedding in Dec. When I looked up hotels in Playa del Carmen my heart sank away- most are so expensive. Has anyone stayed in a reasonably priced hotel? Or do I go inland and rent a car?

Define “reasonably priced”.
$100–150 I guess, tho I’d be very happy to find somewhere under $100’. I want to go to Chichen Itza and always thouht I would stay in Vallidodad or another inland town. Is renting a car a safe idea?
Are you going by yourself? I’m not sure about what you could find for that price range.
I’d not rent a car. It’s safer to take a cab.
No, 3 of us are going. We’re all in the lower income brackets!
So, is that $150 for the 3 of you, or each?
Isn’t it listed pp/pn? I took that to mean each. These were all-inclusives I was checking.
All-inclusives usually list the total price. Ask for a rate for just one person, then for three, and you’ll see.
A few years ago I stayed in the lovely town of Tulum, just south of Playa del Carmen. You’d need to rent a car or take taxis, but Tulum was a much lower-key town than Playa, with a variety of hotels, many affordable, some VERY affordable if you’re willing to stay in a “cabana” with no electricity in the room. The hotels were all located along one long strip of beach about 5 minutes outside of the center of town. My memory may not be entirely accurate on this point, but I think Tulum was about a 20 minute drive south of Playa del Carmen.
Also, when I was there we had a rental car. Seemed entirely safe, as long as you drive with a sensible amount of caution (just as you hopefully would anywhere in the world).
@hannahsugs That’s what I’m looking for! 35 yrs ago in Puerto Vallarta we rented a car one day- the guy warned us severely not to get in an accident!! Hopefully this touristy beach would be safer.
@faye: glad to help! Our vacation there was completely delightful, I definitely think you should try to stay on the coast instead of going inland. We stayed at the Cabanas Copal, but there were also cheaper options. If I were you, I’d pick up a copy of the Lonely Planet Guidebook for the Yucatan Peninsula (you can probably get it from your local library). They should have even more recommendations of places to stay, I remember that their section on Tulum was pretty decent.
