I need advice about hotels in Playa del Carmen.

I’ve committed to going to a wedding in Dec. When I looked up hotels in Playa del Carmen my heart sank away- most are so expensive. Has anyone stayed in a reasonably priced hotel? Or do I go inland and rent a car?
