The kid, the video, the silencer do his parents know?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) April 28th, 2010

I stumbled across a video on YouTube of some kid maybe 11 to 13 (he was smart to never show his face) showing people how to make a silencer for his pellet rifle. I wonder do you know his parents are aware of that? And where did you think he learned it from? And do you figure because he took great care to not to show his face that maybe he should not be doing that? Lastly do you find that rather chilling what kids can find on the Internet? What else are they learning, pipe bomb 101?

Putting plans for silencers and such on the internet is not illegal.
Making one without ATF approval however, is, and this kid could be looking at 20+ years in the bubba-gonna-fuck-you pen if he isn’t careful.

I really, really, really blame parents when issues like this arise. If they cared and actually invested some time and empathy in their kids’ lives than I honestly think we would see less of this. About this kid in particular… *shrugs… who knows?

The sad part is there are people looking for this kind of stuff. What difference does his age make? When I was that young I was teach other kids how to make viruses on school computers.Stuff like this gets around. If you want to know you’ll find out. With or without the Internet. Besides, silencers aren’t that complicated.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Bugabear “Besides, silencers aren’t that complicated.” When I was that age I would have never figured it out (or even thought to try to make one) without something like the Internet. No kid in my neighborhood did not even know how to pick a lock or make a bump key let alone a silencer.

Bugabear's avatar

Well the principle isn’t too complicated. Why just last week I found a book in my library showing the original patents. I grew up in the late 80’s early 90’s time. You could buy a copy of The Anarchist cookbook from peoples lockers. Then again maybe I just went to a f**ked school.

TexasDude's avatar

@Bugabear, that’s exactly what I was about to say.

Those are the kind of kids you read about in the next day’s newspapers——“Boy, 13, Accidentally Shoots Self in Head, Kills Himself”. And the parents “sadly” comment “He was such a good kid. We never had a problem with little Johnny before. We always knew where he was, what he was up to…” Blah, blah, blah…..”

PattyAtHome's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard – Were you going to say the same thing as @Bugabear about how easy it is to get information even without the internet?

Or were you going to say he must have gone to a f**ked school? LOL

TexasDude's avatar

@PattyAtHome, I went to a school filled with hillbillies, but I wouldn’t necessarily say it was fucked up. I was going to mention the anarchist’s cookbook and other books like that which were most likely in circulation when @Hypocrisy_Central was younger.

I thought that pellet guns used compressed air?

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Nullo Most do these days but like that are thing they use at the garage to blow out the brake dust etc I suspect some do have a detectable sound if you are close enough. I can only imagine why any kid would want to muffle any sound from their pellet rifle; shoot out some car windows, bean cats and dogs in the neighborhood, plink some street lights, etc.

@Bugabear @Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard That book was more myth than real (even though there was one) because people in school had heard of it but like those suppose xray glasses you seen in the back of comic books it was about as hard to find as the Holy Grail, and if we did we didn’t have the money to purchase anyhow.

PattyAtHome's avatar

@MRSHINYSHOES – either that, or even worse (as if your scenario isn’t bad enough) those kids can end up being the ones behind Columbine type tragedies.

Bugabear's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central We know that now (some of the stuff in it will make poisonous gas which could kill you) but back then we didn’t. Besides not all of it is bs. Like cheating the scantron sheets. We were bored kids, better blowing apart garden gnomes in a forest than shop lifting or doing hard drugs.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Bugabear Whether or not which two evils are better I guess would be a debate for parents over their kids. If any of us would have had a copy of “The Anarchist’s Cookbook” and some adult found it out they certainly would have been asking questions as to where we got it and what were we planning to do with it. In short back in the day one of our parents (most likely all of them) would have been in our grill wondering WHY we needed a book like that, then the book would have went away never to be seen again.

The day will come when any human will be able to purchase peanut sized nuclear bombs through telepathic instant messaging with black market international distributors. This technology exists right now, but not in fluidlike form yet.

The human race will then have to install the telepathic instant messaging systems in their heads just to effectively fight this threat. Teens will already have installed such things in their minds just to be able to join the link that is formed by doing such

Things are going to get extremely dangerous. And the rational minded will quickly get extremely evolved. Some cities are probably going to be wiped out first. I think our collective psyche unfortunately depends on that before we wise up. Art and trickery might be able to change that. Usually not, but it’s getting more probable.

Whatever happened to that good old fashioned pillow?

Look parents at some point your gonna have to stop thinking that your kids are perfect. So many parents forget how they acted when they were younger and feel like there kids could never do any thing bad or think bad thoughts. The parents that do this and shield there kids from the evils of this crazy world are the parents with the kids that are trying the most crazy shit and looking it up on the web. A young kids mind is curious to whats out there so if you dont explain it to them and let them know why it is wrong or bad then Google will do the job for you and it wont be as pretty. Dont be afraid to talk to them, you may feel awkward but that feeling will be even worse when your 15yo daughter comes home pregnant because she didn’t know what a condom was! As for the young man making a silencer on YouTube, ya its messed up and makes you wonder what is going through his head. You-tube should take the initiative to track down that member or at least delete the video.

Excellent answer, @lostman ! : ))

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

@PattyAtHome Exactly! I think it’s just ridiculous that parents are allowing their kids to “play” with firearms these days. In my neighbourhood, there is a boy of about 9 or 10 years-old who finds pleasure shooting a BB gun that his parents bought him for Christmas! He shoots at cans in his backyard, and a target his Dad made for him. I think that is very irresponsible. And the child often shoots by himself, with no supervision. The boy can inadvertently take out an eye of a passerby on the adjacent street, or seriously injure or kill himself.

We can protect neither our children nor ourselves from EVERY evenuality. I learned to load, fire, clear, and clean a weapon before I was 9 years old. Range safety is paramount. If it’s not safe to fire your weapon ( whether pistol, rifle, or BB-gun ) safely where you live, then go to a range.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@CaptainHarley I think that is part of the point @MRSHINYSHOES you can’t get gun safty from the Internet or without an adult there. I am sure the video that kid leanred silencer technology from mught have said “don’t try this at home” which almost gurantees they are going to try it. As he gets older will he try to perfect it to work with regular bullets from a regular rifle? And if he did would anyone even know what he was up to when it appears they dpn’t know, or worse don’t care?

Bugabear's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central We were quite careful. We also had a code of silence. @lostman has the right idea. Parents shouldn’t be shielding their children the the “horrors” of the outside world. Because when they finally do find them they’re going to be in for a rude awakening. You also have to remember that for every stupid kid, there are 50 other kids who know how to properly handle a gun, whether it be airsoft, bb or real. I’m also surprised that nobody else has pointed out the fact that most homemade silencers don’t work and can actually cause the shot to be louder. Silencer is a very misleading name. Do you have a link to the video?

Nullo's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central I wouldn’t be so quick to brush off the Internet; I learned gun-cleaning from Youtube. Gun safety is mostly lecture, and the Web’s got loads of that.

You never see anybody panic quite so much about knives.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Bugabear Shielding your kids from the horrors of the world I feel take quiate a different thing then not knowing what it is they are finding and giving direction as to what is risky, illegal, or potentially dangerous. But I think this will get you to the vid.

@Nullo Maybe I stand corrected but even though, for a kid gun safty I think is best learned with a knowledgeble adult doing it and showing how. ;-)

Bugabear's avatar

Ah just what I thought. Another one of those kids. Dont worry, he isn’t too much of a threat. First off all if somebody where to put that on a real gun they’d be in for quite a surprise. Second, it’s on a pellet gun that shoots pellets at 1000 fps (which is BS), and everybody knows that sounds created by the gas (which isnt even an issue with springs) is only part of the story. The other part in the mechanical action. This kid has probably watch too many movies and thinks that suppressed guns sound like a “pew” when they actually sound like a stapler (skip to 0:45). Ammunition is also quite an important part. This guy’s going to have quite the epiphany when he learns the truth. If I where his parents I’d take this as a sign that he needs to get out more.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Bugabear “If I where his parents I’d take this as a sign that he needs to get out more.” I think that is part of the problem. Seems the parents don’t know what li’l Sparky is doing in the garage workshop or simply too busy to care.

Bugabear's avatar

Agreed. But we dont have to worry about him becoming another Columbine.
