Why do I have a bad click on one side of my jaw and how can it be fixed?

Asked by beautifulbobby193 (1699points) April 29th, 2010

Sometimes this is painfully and on rare occasions it even locks momentarily before unlocking again with a snap. This happens mostly if I sleep with the damaged (“clicky”) side pressed against my pillow.

I have heard that clicking jaws are quite common, but what about when this causes occasional locking and ache? Is it possible that teeth grinding could be playing a part? I don’t know if I do it or not.

Some mornings I wake up and it is painful but most mornings it is fine, although the click is always there.

Sounds like a TMJ ( temporomandibular joint) problem.

TMJ – Tempromandibular joint disorder. There are a lot of factors involved, but teeth grinding or clenching can definitely play a part. Talk to a dentist about it, there are a lot of strategies to help with it, from simple exercises and mouthpieces to more dramatic approaches when necessary. I have something like this, but it never locks up or hurts anymore, just clicks. I now have a bad habit of repeatedly clicking my jaw periodically.

TMJ or if you are in your late teens/early 20s it could be your wisdom teeth coming in at an angle.

In your case, it does sound like TMJ.

My husband had a “clicky” jaw whenever he chewed, sometimes when he talked or opened his mouth wide. I don’t know how long it lasted, as he had it when we met. Shortly after we got married (or maybe before, I don’t remember), he went to the chiropractor for an adjustment. No click since. His, however, didn’t hurt him.
