I'm looking for a decent site where you're able to download audio books (perhaps, free). Recommendations?

I have always loved Blackstone. They have a website here

Blackstone also will link you to audible.com

Project Gutenberg has audiobooks too.

I think that link i posted above leads to the wrong place.
Here you will find them.

This one looks interesting: Librivox

They also seek volunteers willing to read a chapter or two from books in the public domain.

Audio.com is not free; Bait for three months and then switch; but fairly reasonable.

Project Gutenberg works for “some MP3 devices.” It is primarily for Kindle, Sony Reader and the like

Ahhh. Sorry, I know this is unhelpful but I HATE auto books. For me they take the joy out of reading.

They save my life. I listen to books on CDs when I am trying to fall asleep. The room is dark, Milo is warm and I can shut my eyes.

Try your library system’s Web site or your college library.

gailcalled's avatar

^^I forgot to mention that I get all my CD books from our inter-library lending system, for free. (Hey, Kev.)

Hey, Gail!

Second the library suggestion. My local library has audio-book downloads and CDs.

gailcalled's avatar

OUr library has a free little software app for free books for devices. The problem is that the books are third-rate.

janbb's avatar

@gailcalled That’s probably because those are books not under coyright any more and are available to the lbirary for free. We are just starting to experiment with lending Kindles at my library.

gailcalled's avatar

@janbb: Thanks for the info. (Are you typing without your thumbs tonight?)

janbb's avatar

@gailcalled Well, thumbthing seems to be mithing!

You can get audio books from the iTunes store. Boring classics are free in ITunes U.

tranquilsea's avatar

I second @aprilsimnel suggestion of librivox I’ve downloaded tons of books from that site and enjoyed all of them.

@ratboy: One man’s boring classics is another man’s hours of pleasure and delight.

Archive.org is a great site for audio books. They have hundreds, free. They also have thousands of old time radio dramas, also free. Both streaming and download.

It’s not the easiest site to browse, but if you look through it you’ll be amazed and impressed at what they have
