General Question

Is there somewhere you can find out what supplements to take?

Asked by Gemini (495points) May 1st, 2010

I would like to find a site that has a questionnaire or something similar to help determine supplementation needs based on personal information. (diet, age, health, etc.) I know a proper diet is the best answer, but that’s not the answer I am looking for. I would greatly appreciate any links you might think would help.

Personally, I’d see a nutritionist who can look at your diet in detail and then a doctor who can take a blood test for deficiencies but, in the meantime, you can go here.

I think assuming you need them is a mistake. You may not want to hear that diet is of utmost importance, but it is. Most people do not even need vitamins if they have a good diet. I’m sure if you go into a health food or vitamin store and ask, they will recommend a cart full of supplements for you.

There seems to be more and more research showing that vitamins and supplements are not necessary and may even be harmful in some cases.

Most people who live in Northern climes do not get enough vitamin D3. Particularly now that we no longer (or most of us) bake in the sun in the summer. The deficiency is more severe in the winter. There seeems to be unanimity on this in the traditional medical community.

@Gemini: How old are you?

(I just took the tests and discovered that I am taking exactly what the site recommends exept for extra D3.)
