I have a small bedroom and I am getting a Full HD Sony LCD tv and a ps3 120gb slim console for christmas. For surround sound could I just have a HDMI cable hooked from ps3 to tv to get full hd and surround sound? Because I dont have the money to get a home theatre system?

Using the stereo speakers on a T.V. will not give you surround sound. You can have it mimic surround sound with some tweaking. Since your bedroom is small, Stereo sound is good enough. In a small room, having more than 4 speakers, the sound will be bouncing off all the walls & mixing with the other sound waves & it will sound terrible. Stick with Stereo.
I agree to a point with @rpmpseudonym…in a small bedroom, what’s the point? Small bedroom = small house, probably…full surround will only disturb the neighbors. If you want a fairly realistic pretend system, you might consider a sound bar, they’re smaller, and do a good job of projecting the sound…lots of the electronics manufacturers make them now. You’ll get pretty realistic “surround” with one of those.
As @Jeruba pointed out so succinctly, it is doubtful that more than a small number of people in the communications or media production industry truly need such technology.
For most of the others, I ask, “Whom are you trying to impress, and why?”
Imagine if Home Theatre meant that when watching TV – every few minutes there’d be a hologram of actors breaking into song and dance.
