Are hairless rats supposed to feel like they have a fever?

Asked by ducky_dnl (5387points) May 2nd, 2010

I got a hairless rat today, and he feels really warm. It’s pretty cool in our house and his cage… what could be wrong?

He’s acting normal and runs around, but he is just warm feeling. Like he has a fever.

There probably isn’t anything wrong with it. With no hair, you’re feeling his bare body. If you still feel uneasy about it tomorrow, call a vet & just ask if they’re supposed to feel extra warm.

The body temperature of a rat is much higher than that of a human, so it is okay that he feels very warm in your hand. His body temperature is between 38 and 39 degrees C, when yours is about 37, so I guess it would appear that he has a little fever.

If he’s moving around all right and not hunched over and sleeping too much, I wouldn’t worry…....

Hope that puts your mind at ease.

even my rat with hair feels extra warm to me, and I guess skin on skin contact would be warmer

They run a little warm. I wouldn’t worry unless he starts acting really listless.
