How much of the pie do you cover with tin foil if using a lattice edged crust?

Asked by borderline_blonde (1676points) May 2nd, 2010

I’m making a pie and trying out a lattice crust for the first time to make it pretty. I’ve always just covered the edges of the pie with tin foil while baking a pie with a regular top crust – is this okay to do with a lattice crust too, or do I need to cover most of it?

Thanks in advance!

I’ve always left my pies uncovered and they’ve turned out well. I’ve never tried covering them with tin foil.

I would also just cover the edges toward the end of baking to make sure they don’t brown too much. With a lattice crust, you might not to do it at all since the top should not take much longer to bake than the edges.

I cover the edge about 1 inch, and uncover the last 15 minutes.

Awesome – I’ll just cover the edges towards the end then like I usually do. Thanks guys! I’m a bit inept in the kitchen ;-)

You’re baking a lattice edged pie and you call yourself inept in the kitchen?!?!?
Can I visit your place? I’ll bring the coffee and chocolates.
