I'd like to know why my tattoos feel tingly and puff up...

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) May 3rd, 2010

It doesn’t happen very often, but every now and then my tattoos will tingle and sometimes burn, and the entire design will puff up. The tattoo itself (not the surrounding skin) becomes visibly raised. I think the newest one I have is pushing 8 or 9 years old already, so it isn’t like these are fresh.

Has this happened to anyone else? And why does it happen?

Mine will get itchy and become puffy, and mine aren’t new either. My artist said some people get that sometimes, and it seems to happen to me more often when the temperature changes kind of drastically… at least for me.

Yeah, when I googled this.. it came up with a lot of responses for itching and bumpy tattoos. Mine actually starts to tingle, and then it burns. It’s tender to the touch. But sounds like a similar reaction… so maybe the same cause.

The darkest ones my husband has – very thick, black lines – react to heat and sunlight.

I don’t know much about tattoos, but it could be from an increase in humidity.

@TheOnlyNeffie: most likely is the same thing. Though mine only burn after I scratch them too much.. lol

Do you find it happens more to exposed tattoos? I have several that are covered most of the time that don’t have that reaction as much as the exposed ones.

Wait, your tattoo is not of a gremlin, is it? You’re not supposed to get ‘em wet!

Mine start to tell stories, if you stare at then too long.

the humidity theory is interesting.. it has been really muggy the last few days.
@poofandmook doesn’t seem to matter if they are exposed or not. but i have no color tattoos… all black, I wonder if that has something to do with it like @seek_kolinahr said

@stratman37 haha, no. :)

@TheOnlyNeffie: Actually, I think it does have to do with the black. The one on my wrist is red outlined with black, and only the outline gets puffy. I have a dumb tribal on my arm, and only the black part gets puffy.

Weird! My black ones do that, too! I have no idea why.

It makes me want to get to the bottom of it. I need to know stuff like this. O:)

Darn it! Two big ones on my leg, one on each leg, are itchy as crap and the black is all raised. grumbles under breath

And I just got big ass black bars on my neck…great…

It could be an autoimmune disease called sarcoidosis. The body is fighting a foreign substance in the body. Especially if it’s lumpy or raised.
