The cat drug something in, and it's on the loose!

Asked by escapedone7 (5923points) May 3rd, 2010

I have some small furry thing on the loose. I only see it streak from one place to another. I think it is a vole or something. What do I do to get this thing out of here? Should I just consider it a new house guest?

Lure it out with cheese? Call animal control? Stand on top of the kitchen chair? Get your cat to catch it? Go to bed, leave the door cracked open, and hope the critter finds its way out? Or, go to the pet store tomorrow and buy it a cage.

Set mouse traps or some glue strips where you see it running. Use live traps if you don’t want to kill it. Or let your cat deal with it. If you do use the glue strips make sure your cat cannot get to them.

:( No glue traps please. They are so cruel.

There are live little traps that are weight/ balance tripped. Then you can allow the little creature who is so eager to survive to do so. For best results place it along the wall in the path it will run- hugging the wall.

I think it may be a vole. I don’t think they eat cheese. I know I can’t lay down poison with the cat. I also don’t want to find it half eaten and smelly on my bed. Oh jeepers why am I so scared of a little grey thing. Do they bite?

You could try placing a cardboard box next to the wall with crumpled newspaper so that it runs in and hides then you tilt up, close and take out. :) Happy ending!
It would be more of a sure thing than broom herding which leads a terrified animal to seek a dark tiny area to hide. This goes with their nature of hiding and being quiet.

Yeah I’d rather open the door and chase it out with a broom or something but when it runs at me I run away screaming. Where do I buy a live trap?

escapedone7's avatar

Oh that’s a good idea @Dog. I am going to try to let it live. I do have a box!

edit: you could put hair and garlic around where you DON’T want the vole.

I doubt it would try to bite you, it definitely won’t try to eat you, vole’s are vegan. Where is your cat and why isn’t it helping?

It started raining and I opened the door to let the cat in. The cat was carrying this furry creature and dropped it in the middle of the floor, and off it ran. The cat chased it a bit but when it hid behind the dryer the cat got bored. The creature wasn’t bleeding at all and seems very in tact and healthy. It runs fast.

It has a short tail and is dark grey. It is oval shaped. It’s definitely not a mouse because the tail is stubbyish and it doesn’t have big mouse ears.

Sounds like a short tailed shrew.

Is this it? They are meat eaters, put down some bacon where you want to catch it.

Make sure your bedroom door is shut and that you have a towel in front of it so it won’t run in there, or any other room for that matter.

Please don’t kill it…

I always caught mice with peanut butter – worked much better than cheese. Good luck!

escapedone7's avatar

@WestRiverrat that looks a lot like it, yes! I think the nose was shorter though. Like this one I hadn’t considered a shrew. That is definitely a shrew.

Try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcpXvv4vZ0w&feature=related

There are other videos on youtube that are more polished, but they put water in the bottom :( no one should have to see that.

It made an appearance around 4 am. It came out to eat. It ate some of the cat’s catfood and other food I left out. The little thing eats like a horse it is unbelievable. Then I tried to sneak up on it and cover it with a box but it zipped away. It is still on the loose but I’ve set food out for it since apparently the little booger is very very hungry. I’ve named it speedy Gonzales.

escapedone7's avatar

Speedy Gonzales has left the house. He is in the garden. I left the door open and watched him waltz out on his own following a trail of cut up bacon. Thanks for that suggestion. It loved the bacon. I have NEVER seen a tiny little thing eat so much in my entire life. It is in my mint bed. It still looks quite healthy and in tact. It is lucky considering it was briefly in a cats mouth.

The odd thing about cats is they don’t always kill to eat. Sometimes they just play with their pray, letting it go and catching it again like a game. It doesn’t look like my cat wanted to eat it so much as play with it (or it would be dead).

Thank-you for not hurting it.

Yay, to freedom.

@escapedone7This is it”~

Cute lil bugger.
I’d put out a shoe box with some treats in it (chips, cheese, something yummy)
Hopefully, he’ll make his way in there so you can set ‘em free.

edited to add: oops…I replied before reading your update ;)

LOL! I wish you could have seen the face I made as I read the title! I’d say let the cat stay after it. My cat Berthe brought in a skink once and I let her take care of it. So gross.

Jilly gave me a mouse a few days ago. It wasa very cute critter, same grey color as Jilly. When I looked at it from my computer I thought about getting up and getting a towel to throw over it and chuck it outdoors. It boogied out the door and went somewhere in the living room. Jilly is a rather poor mouser—- her brother was the mighty hunter.
I didn’t try to find it. If Jilly gets it, sooner or later I will smell that sickly sweet smell and find it. Or I may see it run and get the towel. Or I may see mouse turds and get more aggressive.
A dilemma for another day. . . * sigh *

@Dog does the box with newspaper really work? Is it that easy?
