Do you dislike olives? If so, what do they taste like to you?

Asked by La_chica_gomela (12594points) May 5th, 2010

Olives (except the canned black ones, preferably store brand) taste like barf to me, or garbage. The more expensive and classy the olive, the stronger my aversion to it. Cheap green olives they put in martinis are only slightly disgusting, but those olive-oil packed fancy Greek ones make me want to run away!

I love olives. Olives and bread and cheese, mmm, mmm. Funny how different people’s taste buds are. I have tried this fish and that fish, and just don’t like fish, nor sour cream and all its offspring.

I’ve never liked them that much. I find they often add a strange flavor to the things they’re put in. I don’t know how to describe it, I just know that I’m very aware of the presence of olives in food, but I still eat them. There are some cases where I really do like that extra flavor, such as in Mexican food. Either way, they’ve never been one of my favorite foods. My brother on the other hand would just eat a bowl of olives for fun. (Weirdo).

I guess I’m mainly referring to black olives here. I mean, they’re freakin’ black. That’s weird!

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@DominicX: Canned black olives are really okay with me. I actually like those. It’s the nice ones, like the ones you find in Greek food, and hummus, and in olive bars that are really icky to me.

Seaofclouds's avatar

I don’t like the texture or taste of olives. For some reason to me they taste really, really salty.

You are entitled to your opinion but I love olives. They are a taste I would truly miss if they ceased to exist. If I ever cook for you, I will leave them out of the recipe, ok?

andrew's avatar

I totally agree with you. They taste like how a certain male liquid smells.

I can just barely palate them in bread, and maybe on a pizza.

Yet, I love olive oil. Go figure.

i love olives….black, even green. I dont do antipasta bars, so i dont know about weird brines.

It’s all about the olive.

partyparty's avatar

I really love olives… black or green. I have them as a starter, with peppers, cheese and toasted bread. Yummee. I also use them when cooking.
Yes please for me!

rebbel's avatar

And of course, if you didn’t know already, the green and the black are the same olives.
The green one is the unripe olive.
They turn black due to added chemicals.

There are different types (and qualities).

The green ones are really bitter, my sister loves them, but I hate them.
The black ones are either small (usually for oil) or medium and slightly blue (which is not a good thing), but if they’re completely black (or sort of brownish rather than bluish) I love them. My dad likes a variety called “hamades” which is basically soggy brown ones that are over-ripe. They’re disgusting, but somehow considered a delicassy and cost 5x more than the normal ones.

The ones you get at the supermarket are probably the generic Peloponesian ones (the ones that are not good enough for local consumption and just shipped over to foreigners who don’t know better). As with all imported goods, they’re not as fresh as if you were there yourself.

I’ve noticed a huge difference in oil too. The oil I managed to find in most supermarkets in Germany would often be over 4% acidity (usually Spanish or Italian). Greek oil tended to be slightly better (2.5%), but extremely expensive and still not that good. In Greece it costs less and is almost always under 2%. The one I use is local and has less than 0.2%. You can actually taste the difference.

I have never liked any sort of olives, but never related the taste to any other flavors or smells before. I especially dislike the green ones, but can tolerate one or two black ones on a pizza or in a taco salad. People tend to look at me like I have two heads when I say that I don’t like them.

nebule's avatar

When I first tasted them, when I was 9 I thought they tasted like perfume! I like them now…any kind…

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I love olives. Any holiday relish tray HAS to have the green ones. And the black ones, I could (& have) eaten them right out of the can. My two daughters also love them. I remember when they were little,. they’d put an olive on each finger & then wave them at each other, LOL. good memories

There is an olive tree near a site where I occasionally work, and I picked an olive and tried to eat it.
Nearly gagged. I had no idea olives were pickled before.
If you don’t like certain kinds of olives, especially if they are the high end ones, your issue may be with the pickling, and not the olives.

Cruiser's avatar

I absolutely love olives especially Queen sized ones stuffed and marinating in a Vodka Martini!! There is though a HUGE difference in green olives in terms of texture flavor and ‘bite’. I have found that I like only certain brands and 5 Star is one of the better ones and is very consistent in quality. I could eat a whole can of black olives in one sitting! YUM!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Cruiser “I could eat a whole can of black olives in one sitting! YUM!”

Uh…..I DID when I was little. Mom had a little can & I ate the whole thing. Let’s just say, I didn’t stray far from the bathroom when they hit. It was ugly! LOL I still think about that. It’s a wonder I don’t hate them, but I could do it again IF I didn’t know the consequences. Hahaaaaa

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

I don’t like them. They taste like dirt.Yes,I have tasted dirt;)

aprilsimnel's avatar

I love olives. It’s one of my favourite parts of grocery shopping at Fairway, hitting the olive barrels and sampling a few different kinds, and taste testing the olive oils with pieces of fresh bread.

Cruiser's avatar

@jbfletcherfan Ooooh! Too bad there! Yes a whole can in a little tummy would be pushing your luck…but I love them…yes I do!! YUM!!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Cruiser Tell me! I still eat the hell out of them, just not a can at a time!!! LOL

hearkat's avatar

@filmfann: Excellent point! I don’t like anything pickeled, except pickles – and only a few of them are tolerable to my palate.

Cruiser's avatar

@jbfletcherfan Yes…by the handful is much more sensible and avoid the ones with dirt on them!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Cruiser Dirt? Where have YOUR olives been??? LOL

Cruiser's avatar

@jbfletcherfan I was just cautioning you to avoid the ones that apparently @lucillelucillelucille has been eating! ;)))

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Cruiser LOL…I get you now. Nooo problem. ;-)

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Cruiser&jbfletcherfan- It’s best to avoid those vile orbs;)

OneMoreMinute's avatar

Knock Knock?
Who’s there?
Olive.
Olive who?
Olive you!

I have had cats that would go cwazy over an olive, and roll all over it with their face, purring.

@Cruiser Mmmmm, Oh I love big o olives served in a gin martini!
@jbfletcherfan I have many times, eaten a whole can of black olives.

Olove dis question!

Coloma's avatar

I love olives of all kinds, I make a killer salad with cukes, tomatos and black olives in a red wine vinagarette. Olives on mexican food, the huge cocktail olives at least 3 on a skewer in a grey goose bloody mary, and, of course, just eating them right out of the can/jar.

Yum olives!

Now beets, thats another story enitirely, pickled beets….gag! lol

Jude's avatar

When I get a craving for something salty, I eat about a half a cup of green olives. I love them on my pizza, subs. Also, black olives, too.

The best, though, are the rather large green olives stuffed with blue cheese for dry martinis.

Cruiser's avatar

@jjmah YES!! Big ‘ol green olive crammed full of blue cheese are the best!
@OneMoreMinute Sorry…strictly vodka and olives for me! :))

thriftymaid's avatar

I don’t eat them at all. The green ones with a red center remind me of weird eyeballs. The black ones smell so horribly that I don’t know how anyone eats them.

Sueanne_Tremendous's avatar

I simply hate the little fuckers. I love olive oil, however.

partyparty's avatar

@thriftymaid….. weird eyeballs LOLL… I love that answer!!

downtide's avatar

@La_chica_gomela I love olives and I like the fancy green ones best of all. I would happily sit and scoff a whole jar of them.

Berserker's avatar

Olives kick ass, especially those high class allure ones with pimento stuffed inside. I also love black olives. I think a lot of what makes the taste is what they marinate in, rather than the olive itself…I once had jumbo olives that came in this nasty greasy sauce that smelled like gasoline and tasted like saliva. Ew ew ew.

Otherwise though, I down those like fish downs water yo.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@andrew and @Sueanne_Tremendous: I love olive oil too! Weird!

@filmfann: You could be onto something!
