Living without modern amenities?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) May 6th, 2010

Are there any modern conveniences that you live without? Do you choose to live without them (why?) , or is it a matter of necessity (financial or otherwise)? Do you miss or wish you had these things?

For example, my husband and I live in a century home… which needed & still needs a lot of work. So we don’t have air conditioning because it will require a major renovation. Also, we don’t have a bathroom with a shower. Both are examples of something that are difficult for us to have right now, but we’d like to at some point. However, we don’t have cable/satellite, a garbage disposal, an ice maker, and we almost never buy paper towels. We get along fine without those things, and I don’t think we’d ever go out of our way to get them.

How about you?

I have lived without cell phones (have them right now). It was fine.

@marinelife I was anti-cell phone for years. I think there is nothing more aggravating than a phone that goes with you EVERYWHERE, and not only that.. people EXPECT you to have it on you at all times. I’m with you on that.

Really? I expected more responses to this. Dishwashers? Washer/dryer? Car? Video games? Something…??

I could live without a dishwasher without a problem. I actually enjoy standing at the sink, in front of my kitchen window, and washing dishes.

About the only modern thing I have is a PlayStation and an Internet connection…I think I’d do fine. It’s almost a surprise that I don’t own and use a chamber pot.

I don’t have a dishwasher. Never have. It’s actually a goal in my life – to get a dishwasher.

We use cloth napkins, cloth diapers, cloth rags for cleaning…

We do not have a video game system. At all. Even my computer is too old to run them.

Don’t have a garbage disposal, either. Unless you count the dog.

We don’t pay for trash collection. Every couple of weeks we make a run to the recycling center.

You know… it’s really hard to make a list of what you don’t have. I mean, should I list that I don’t have an iPod? or a smart phone? or a tablet computer? or a self-cleaning oven? or a deep freeze? or an airboat?

I would really miss air conditioning… I dissolve when it hits 85 and start praying for death if it gets to 100. Next to that would be modern methods of heating a home. After that a refrigerator and stove. Losing the washer and dryer would not be much fun.

I would miss the internet but it would not be a huge issue. I would very much miss the variety in music but, again, not that big of an issue.

I could not care less if I ever saw a phone again, cellular or landline. I cannot stand the things.

@Seek_Kolinahr you make a good point… the list of things we don’t have could get pretty long. I guess I really didn’t think of it that way, I just figured a handful off the top would work. But you’re completely right :)
