How do you make an illustration using gimp?

I have a photo that I am wanting to turn into an illustration, I have tried and tried, over and over again and just can not figure it out. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Have you checked out Filters > Artistic ? There is a “cartoon” filter there that might do what you’re looking for…
@lilikoi yeah I tried that and that didn’t really do anything but make the photo kinda fuzzy and weird colors. maybe I should try to just get the main outline as a bold outline and go from there. I dunno lol. @YARNLADY I have read through that a lot but not really gettin what I want. It would be so much easier with photoshop or illustrator but don’t have either of those anymore.
Maybe try Irfanview Its free and I love it. Be sure to download all the add ons.
