Well, I usually bring a book. Perhaps a funny book, like “Why Do Men Have Nipples?: Hundreds of Questions You’d Only Ask Your Doctor After Your Third Martini” – it’s always a good conversation piece.

If that doesn’t work, you can whittle.

I play yahtzee on my phone… and read Maclean’s guide to universities and other magazines

I usually take a book or play games on my phone. If it’s an appointment for my son or my son is with me, we play “I spy”.

I’ll text people in my contacts list.

Meditate…people watch…nap only if you can awaken easily and be with-it. Depends on what the appointment is for.

I read a book unless there are loud people near me. Then I run internal counter-dialogues in my head.

Take out your notebook, pick a person in your field of vision, study them a minute, and then write a mini-bio as you imagine it would be.

If you’re into drawing, carrying (and using) a mini-sketchbook is a nice activity for downtime.

Reading books on an Amazon Kindle. This always entertains me when waiting for an appointment.

I usually read the magazines provided in the waiting area because they are typically things I would never buy on my own or look at anywhere else. That’s how I keep up with popular culcha.

I wouldn’t do anything that isn’t quiet and still. There’s no need to annoy others who are waiting.

I clean out my purse, make to-do lists, read.

I sometimes ask them to make a copy of recipes in the magazines I find there, or I always carry a needlework project in my bag which I can work on any time, any where.
