Maybe you’ve seen the following XKCD comic before:

I got to thinking about this the other night during a thunderstorm. If lightning was not something we were accustomed to, wouldn’t the concept be unnerving?
What other bizarre things do we accept without much consideration?

Sneezing. Everything stops for a split-second and then we have a runny nose. It’s odd. Especially for those who sneeze after looking at a bright light.
I think automobiles are one of the strangest things we accept in our daily lives. They are such a counter-intuitive, destructive way to travel!
That we create (and take) life.
That we live in buildings and constantly use devices that are all powered by a seemingly magical force that nobody really even knew existed until about 100 years ago.*
* electrons. People had inklings about the vague notion of “electricity” a while before that, but even so… weird.
Those big metal birds flying across our skies, I mean how the hell?
Waking up to eviscerated rodents next to my bed nearly every morning from the ancient cat hunter that works the graveyard hunting shift.
I accept this as part of my morning routine.
This morning was an easy cleanup, disimbowled mega gopher with bloody body cavity that I was able to neatly pick up via the throw rug it was consumed on.
Toss remains over deck, rug in wash with a little bleach…the killing mat is prepped for tonights feast.
That we are “individuals,” and not colonies of trillions of individual cells mostly but not always cooperating with each other.
dairy cows. Who was the first guy to say you go squeeze that thing hanging under her and I’ll drink whatever comes out?
Adam said that after biting the apple.
Talking into a plastic implement (phone) and hearing another voice come out of it.
Glass and plastic. None of this stuff existed before we figured out how to make it.
And once we did, all the sudden we can see — things that are both very close (microscopic objects) and very far (distant stars and galaxies). It’s like our species took off some kind of cosmic blinkers.
The fact that we regularly form communities with people we’ve never met and have never even spoken to?
The strangest thing is that people will accept without proof so many beliefs that are demonstrably untrue on the basis of the statements of individuals so unworthy of trust that in a reasonable society, such people would not be accorded an audience at all.
I refer here to those who believe as they are told by such individuals as Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, and Rush Limbaugh.
I agree with using electricity, and using communicators regularly.
Hearing sirens throughout the day and the hum of traffic all day and night – it’s never quiet where I live – plus not being dark at night.
There are beasts that live with us in our homes and sleep in our beds and look ridiculously cute to us despite being different species.
@Qingu I don’t find that so weird until we start dressing them up like humans and calling them our children.
criticism from arrogant people
that colors control the way we move. my professor told us a story about how, when noted that he has just drove through a red light, his friend said “i’m not gonna let a red light-bulb tell me what i can and can’t do!”
We accept the monotony of ordinary daily living without tapping into the potential each of us has to make a positive difference in our life.
assaults on our self-esteem…
