"phonemyPC" for android? what is it?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) May 7th, 2010

What exactly does this app allow you to do? It just comes up on my computer as “phone my pc”... from what I can find online, it allows for “live remote viewing” of a PC, does the person have to be close, or can it pick up images from any computer you have it set up to view?

It’s a remote viewer along the lines of a Terminal Server Client or some other program that uses Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Protocol.

Basically, it allows you to access your computer remotely, and gives you a representation of your Windows PC’s desktop and user interface on the display of your Android phone.

It can manipulate any Windows machine that has the appropriate server program installed – in this case I suspect that it will be a proprietary protocol and program. You can use it anywhere that you have connectivity with the phone network for your Android device, although obviously it will take a big performance hit on a 2G network. It will perform better when you have 3G connectivity, and will likely perform best when you have a wireless network on a fixed line ADSL/Cable connection with bandwidth over 7mbps.

To be frank, I wouldn’t pay for this software – there are free alternatives that have been in development for far longer, and I see no reason why they wouldn’t work as well as, if not better than, this application.

Search Android Market for VNC or RDP, and you’ll find FLOSS alternatives.

Thanks for the answer, @the100thmonkey
I don’t have an android, but the person who does have this app installed said that it was for downloading movies/media to the android…. is that likely?

I can think of simpler ways to do it.
