What do you thing people are trying to imply about my behavior and physical impression when they say I look like a teacher?

Asked by RomeoandJuliet (19points) May 8th, 2010

Often people tell me I look like a school teacher. I am trying to figure out what it is about me that causes people to have this impression. What kind of things about a person say “school teacher” to you? And do you see this is a positive or a negative thing? Thanks.

The first thing that comes to mind is ‘harmless’.

To me the image of the “School Teacher” is that of poise, wisdom and confidence. Not a nerd but (usually) not a seductress. Honest rather than manipulative, educated rather than ignorant.

I would see it as a positive thing.

Are you a schoolteacher? And are you, say, over 40? And do you perhaps wear glasses?

RomeoandJuliet's avatar

No I am much younger than 40 and I don’t wear glasses. So basically ugly, old and boring Jerooba.

Maybe you have a straight face to people. but by a long shot you don’t look like a teacher believe me. And your not ugly and old. Don’t worry that boring thing can be helped just ask&answer things on fluther XD.
My parents are both teachers T_T

maybe they meant sexy schoolteacher, apple for the teacher?

You look as if your brain is functional and you don’t take any guff. People remember the traits of their teachers who behaved with intelligence and poise. They might have been a little intimidated by those teachers, but such people command respect.

First impressions:- Confident, intelligent, poised and caring!

Prim and proper. I wouldn’t take it as an insult even if they meant it as one. I’ve been told the same thing many times and I always say thank you, this sorts the compliments from the insults, the people who meant to take a poke at me get all frowny when I say thanks.

@RomenandJuiletJeruba has one of the best brains here; she is neither ugly, old, boring nor Jerooba.

And instant type casting someone by his/her appearance seems foolish. If someone says that to you, ask him/her what s/he means. A question often forces someone to think before responding; a statement can be easily rebutted.

Doesn’t anybody view teachers as intelligent, educated and supportive? There are places in the world where teachers are looked up to, even though they still make the same crummy salaries.

NeroCorvo's avatar

@LostInParadise I am pretty sure that my above post was along those lines. There is nothing in the least wrong with being referred to as looking like a teacher. It is a respected profession that requires a person to have a lot of positive traits, education, patience etc.

I do think that a lot depends on the person saying it, and how they are saying it.

Let’s face it. Any description can sound like a slam when said with vinegar.
If not said with spite then one can simply take it as a compliment.

Wise, well-educated, sensible, smart (in both senses of the word). I’d take it as a positive thing. People have occasionally asked me if I’m a schoolteacher – I’ve been flattered but they were quite wrong.

Be glad they didn’t say you look like a librarian.

I think they mean you seem calm, disciplined, & intelligent.
