After the new division of questions, how should whispering be used?

Asked by bob_ (21940points) May 9th, 2010

So, off-topic comments are not allowed in General, and Social has an (almost) anything-goes vibe. What should be “said” in whisper? Are jokes in Social still supposed to be whispered? Or is it more of a personal preference thing?

Personal preference.

very quietly

Usually an aside or addition of an off-topic comment within an answer.

bob_'s avatar

@Dr_C But if off-topic comments are not allowed in General, does that mean that off-topic comments in Social should be whispered?

Dr_C's avatar

Here’s the thing. If you notice I said “aside or addition of an off-topic comment within an answer”.

So if I were to answer your question as I did previously with every intention of actually providing a valid response and then decided to add my own little brand of humor and or nonsensical comment then there’s no problem.

It’s not that off topic comments aren’t allowed. It’s that they are not allowed by themselves as the totality of an answer. If you choose to add commentary (be it personal or any other brand you subscribe to) to your answer, you are free to do so. I personally think it adds a little something to answers.

bob_'s avatar

Ah. I thought no off-topic comments were allowerd, period. In that case, if somone says something about an off-topic comment I added to a “serious” answer, would I have to reply with another “serious” answer and the off-topic reply?

I swear I’m not trying to be a smart-ass here, just trying to understand the “small-print” part of the new policies.

Dr_C's avatar

That would work.

Now make me a sandwich!

bob_'s avatar

Gotcha.

I think I’ll continue to be all-business in General. I’ll take delivery of my sandwiches exclusively in Social. So you go make me one. Pfft. Noob.

Jokes need to be telegraphed with “lol” and ”/lol” tags so there’s no doubt that it’s a joke. And they shouldn’t be in the thread, but in a PM. Actually, it is much preferred if the joke is sent outside of Fluther altogether. There’s no place for humor in Fluther; people are asking questions because they want to know, dammit.

Gotta respect the Q.

bob_'s avatar

@CyanoticWasp Go make me a sandwich, outside Fluther.

CyanoticWasp's avatar

@bob_ okay.

Abracadabra alakazam.

You’re now a sandwich, outside of fluther.

chyna's avatar

@CyanoticWasp Not true. Humor is allowed on Fluther. You just have to know the time and place.

bob_'s avatar

@chyna It’s 11:05 pm, Central Time.

chyna's avatar

@bob_ It’s 12:06 pm Eastern time. My time.

bob_'s avatar

@chyna Eastern time sucks.

chyna's avatar

@bob_ No, it’s the best time.

SeventhSense's avatar

@chyna
Well I find you funny.
I don’t care what they say

chyna's avatar

@SeventhSense Thank you…. I think.
(love that pic best)

SeventhSense's avatar

You just love puppies.

chyna's avatar

@SeventhSense I do. I am so easy. Just walk up to me with a puppy and I’m yours.

SeventhSense's avatar

Ok next time. Not a blow off but I’m off to slumber these tired dogs.

chyna's avatar

Ok, I will hold you to it. I’m off to slumber land too.

I use it with answers that are still on topic, but more directed to the other jellies, and not the OP.

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

The whisper serves no official function now, as anything off-topic in a General question thread is forbidden. Just eye strain now.

augustlan's avatar

Again, if the off-topic whisper and or joke are used in conjunction with a legitimate answer, they are allowed. I swear, it isn’t that hard! << See what I did there?

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

@augustlan But an off-topic whisper cannot be stand-alone, even if you’ve made a previous “on-topic” response to the question? I’m not trying to be difficult, but this “can but can’t” is confusing me. To keep it clear in my own mind, I have to consider General as a “no humor, no off-topic zone”, straight answers and nothing else.

CyanoticWasp's avatar

@stranger_in_a_strange_land just respond as you would to any other General, and you should be fine.

bob_'s avatar

@stranger_in_a_strange_land I hear you, man. That’s my exact point.

MissAnthrope's avatar

Someone come and fix my Firefox so I can use whispers!

I can do it on other browsers, just not this one, specifically. Hrmph.

Berserker's avatar

I think it’s a personal thing, which can be easily applied with the new guidelines and changes.

In the end, I still don’t even know what the hell whispering is for, other than addressing someone specifically. XD

augustlan's avatar

@MissAnthrope Have you tried updating FF? I use it, and can whisper. :)

MissAnthrope's avatar

@augustlan – Yeah.. it’s something about this particular browser on my laptop. FF on my mom’s, I can whisper. I have no idea what the deal is!

SeventhSense's avatar

@MissAnthrope
Actually it’s subjective. I can barely hear you.

MissAnthrope's avatar

Hahaha. ORLY??!!1

SeventhSense's avatar

No just kidding o’ course. I never have a problem with Firefox though. Maybe you need an update

Strauss's avatar

I guess I’ll just stop with my one-liners, and insert them (like this!) within my real answer.

zenele's avatar

I USE THE WHISPER MODE TO WRITE IN ALLCAPS. IT’S LIKE SHOUTING QUIETLY.

bob_'s avatar

@zenele GO MAKE ME A SANDWICH.

bob_'s avatar

@zenele Is that a family thing? How old did you say your daughter was?

zenele's avatar

@bob_ Legal, but still too young. And really very far away.

Dr_C's avatar

@zenele I can haz pastrami sammich?

bob_'s avatar

@zenele Dude, why do you say “legal”? Why do you think I’m asking? You think I’m some sort of… wait, I’m not fooling anybody, am I?

So, legal, huh?

zenele's avatar

Well, you’ve been enquiring for a couple of years now – she was bound to be legal at some point. Still very far away. Ask Matt about time travel.
