Running a 32-bit program on Windows 7 64-bit, and what is the big difference?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) May 10th, 2010

I want to run Folderico on my PC, but it says it only currently supports 32-bit. I know you can change setting on the pc to accomadate it, but will it run just as well? What are the chances of it messing up. Also, what is the big difference between 32-bit and 64-bit anyway? Performance? Resolution? etc.

Most 32 bit programs will run Windows 7 64 without any problems. In fact you’d be hard pushed to notice any differences at all.

However there are some programs that won’t work at all. Hardware drivers for example need to be specifically written for 64 bit OS, similarly iTunes needs a 64 bit version probably because it contains the drivers to run iPods etc.

From looking at the website the prgram your interested in works on the file structure of windows which probably differs between the 32 and 64 bit versions quite a bit. With that in mind I would guess that this program won’t work at all on a 64 bit system.

As per above poster, you can emulate most any 32-bit program seamlessly. The difference is 64-bit OS will support more RAM, so chances are the program will make use of it if needed.
