Is it difficult to find friends in college who enjoy memorizing information for fun, not only when they have to study for an exam?

Asked by anna2point5 (19points) May 10th, 2010

I am a 24 year old Russian girl living in New York. I’m a full time undergrad student at Hunter College, majoring in Psychology. I have many different interests outside of school, including literature, travel, animals, music, painting, and yoga. That’s why its hard for me to make friends in college. I think its sad that many students are not interested in learning new things, and only memorize information when they have an upcoming exam. I am looking for a boyfriend, but a lot of guys in my classes only care about sex, parties, and drinking. How can I find a boyfriend with whom I could have a stimulating conversation about my interests?

I would think your best bet would be to join a club that is interesting to you… or maybe talk to the school about starting one. Also, maybe check Craigslist but please be careful!! Welcome to Fluther & good luck!

You will have to find other people who share some of your interests and associate with them. Among them will be males who might appreciate you for your intellect and inquisitive mind, not just your appearance or potential as a sexual partner. @Samantha_Rae‘s suggestion is terrific and worth trying out.

I was never involved with the drinkers, the party crowd and those who bragged about sexual conquests. I went to University close to where I grew up, so I had an easier time making friends than a student from another country. I did however join clubs and organizations with students with whom I shared common interests.

Yeah, I’d be careful with Craigslist haha. It really has had a bad reputation in its recent history. I hate when guys always drink and only care about carnal interst partying 100% of the time and stuff like that, they make the rest of us look bad lol. Good luck tho and welcome to “The Collective”! :)

Transfer to my college. There are people here who memorize Classical epics and recite them in the woods by torchlight. There are also some folks who form bands and improvise songs on street fixtures within a few minutes. And of course, there are the people that make little light up machines and stick them in inconspicuous places for kicks. You’d fit right in.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard You go to a great college!

My experience, 35+ years ago, is that people who do this (like myself) tend not to congregate in groups and were treated as social outcastes. Such activity tends to be a substitute for, rather than part of social activity. I’ve heard that attitudes towards nerds have changed somewhat over the years; good luck in finding finding them.

I went to a women’s college where everyone loved learning. The admissions office did the selecting; they still pick fascinating women with broad interests and first-rate brains. Luckily the admissions pool is much larger than the incoming freshman class.

@stranger_in_a_strange_land, as you probably know, I definitely fit into that nerd paradigm though I might say I’m decidedly more suave and that sort of behavior is pretty much the norm here. A 20-something you would probably be one of the more popular kids on my campus.

Sex and drinking are tough to compete with at college age. Good luck.

You should take the test to try to qualify for Mensa. You’ll find all kinds of people there-including ones who like memorizing facts.
