Why do dogs eat grass and then throw up?

Periodically our dog will go around the back yard and eat long grass. He is usually sick a couple of hours later. Is he eating the grass because he likes it and he’s just too stupid to know it will make him sick? Or, is he sick and he eats the grass to feel better?
