Another Saturday Night and I ain't got nobody?

Asked by Zen_Again (9936points) May 15th, 2010

This is the Saturday night singles thread.

I’m cheating, though, as it’s early morning here on Sunday and I’m off to work soon. But I was alone and single last night – Saturday.

If you met ‘em you could get ‘em but as yet you haven’t met ‘em; that’s why you’re in the shape you’re in.

Heh heh… you’ve got us.

Now don’t you wish you were really alone?

CMaz's avatar

Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way.

Is that a Cat Stevens or Sam Cooke mood?

Zen_Again's avatar

It’s the Cat Steven’s version – I always liked his voice. I saw a doc on him once – a really fascinating story – I’m talking pre-Islam – just his life growing up in England and his rise to success.

Ah yes… Yusuf Islam.

An amazing individual. My all time favorite singer and song writer.
I have the Majikat DVD. Its great.

I didn’t even know Cat Stevens had a version. What was the point of that? Did he also do a version of Dancing Cheek-to-Cheek because Fred Astaire’s wasn’t quite on target?

I’m alone like always. My baby boys are asleep so I’m watching a chick flick.

Zen_Again's avatar

@ChazMaz That’s something else we have in common – I think I know all of his songs and listened to his albums over and over in the seventies.

@dpworkin Here’s an amazing version – even you’ll like it

Zen_Again's avatar

And if you had any doubt as to his bringing something new to it, as they say on American Idol, here’s Cat doing it live – I think it’s amazing

Karma is a bitch, huh?

It’s Yusuf Islam now, though. And @Zen_Again , that is a great version!

dpworkin's avatar

Perhaps I am Old and In the Way. I detected no improvement over Sam Cooke.

Zen_Again's avatar

Show of hands: who thinks Cat brought something of how own to the song? Not an improvement, but rather, a great newer original version. IMHO.

Les's avatar

@Zen_Again: Oh, absolutely. It is like the difference between The Beatles A Little Help From my Friends and Joe Cocker’s cover. You can’t beat the original, but there is nothing like Joe Cocker’s version.

All the single jellies.
All the single jellies.

I spent the night sewing and reading bad FanFiction.
Typical Saturday, actually.

@Zen_Again
I like…both?

And you just got paid. So sad.

Zen Again, i have never heard the Cat Stevens version of this song. i just did. its really a good new version of an old rock and roll classic. thanks for the info.

I like Cat Stevens version best.
And I was home alone on Saturday night also. (sigh)

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

Standard situation for me and I don’t want it differently. A glass of scotch, a good book and Rachmaninoff on the stereo. Cat Stevens version for me.

Zen_Again's avatar

Thanks guys – Nya nya to you @dpworkin – just kidding.

But I agree with @Les about the Joe Cocker version’s of the Beatles. I asked a question about cover songs once – I’ll dig it up – it was a good thread.

Some people like Pat Boone and the Crew-Cuts, some people prefer the Ink-Spots and Big Mamma Thornton. De gustibus non disputandem est

John Belushi did a killer rendition (Joe Cocher style) of “A Little Help From my Friends.”

Ironic to the question. On Saturday Night Live. :-)

I was gonna make some joke about how you always mention Jeruba in your search tags and how this time, for once, you didn’t, but Io and behold…so now I’m fucked out of a one liner.
forgetting of course that this is a reference to something?
But yeah I was alone too, I watched Ninja Turtles and pretended I lived in New York with Stranger in Strange Land.

Zen_Again's avatar

@Symbeline Thanks. I didn’t know anyone noticed that.

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

@Symbeline It’s New Hampshire, mon amie.(but it can be New York if you like) Any village that’s ripe for raiding :^)

Berserker's avatar

@stranger_in_a_strange_land It can be any place, the Ninja Turtles, Symbeline and Stranger go where they want. ^^

@Zen_Again I’m jaleous. XD
