Hazel Soares gets her degree at age 94. Have you studied later in life?

Asked by partyparty (9167points) May 16th, 2010

Just read this:-
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20100516/twl-woman-becomes-grand-old-graduate-at9-3fd0ae9.html
Hazel Soares is 94 and has just obtained her art history degree. I say well done Hazel. What do you think?
Have you done your studying later in life? Did you obtain a qualification? Did it affect your life in any way?

Good for her!! I’ve gone back after a 33 year hiatus to finish my history doctorate. I might be finished by 55…or 60? The degree shouldn’t affect my life, I have no intention of teaching history. Just tying up loose ends, and a kind of memorial to Meghan, who died before completing her psychology doctorate.

Never stop learning! I read extensively, and not just novels, self-help books or celebrity biographies. (Actually I’ve never read any of the last two.) It’s interesting to pick up a book at the library on engineering, biology, anatomy, history, etc.

@stranger_in_a_strange_land So glad you are going back to finishing your PhD. Meghan would be so very proud I am sure of it.
@prescottman2008 Yes, learning continues throughout our lives. Our brain has such a capacity don’t you think?

I just got into grad school at 61. I need a job.

@dpworkin Do you get any type of student loan in the USA? Have you checked out if anyone needs casual labour in restaurants, pubs, cafes? Perhaps you could work part-time in a store or something like that.
I hope you are successful, both in your career and in finding some work.

I have taken non-credit courses all my life; Teaching ESL, advanced French conversation, how to use a PC, remedial Drivers’ Ed (recently); I am also an autodidact and have learned many new things on my own.

I will always be up for learning more about my craft among other things.
There’s no age limit on curiosity and the desire to know things!:))

@partyparty I am spending my life savings and 6 years at university so that I will not have to work in a restaurant, pub or cafe.

@dpworkin Well I hope you are successful.
@lucillelucillelucille Ah yes, those gorgeous crafted pots for your pets. You are indeed talented

My dad got his Master’s when he was 63 and about to retire. I’ve thought about getting another degree, but I don’t want it bad enough to go through with it (I’m 38 now).

I read that article earlier today. Yes, I attended law school in my fourties.

Yes I got a degree at age 32. I still wish I could go back and lose the student loan. An education is expensive unless you are moving into a lucrative career and I wouldn’t do it again. My greatest education I got outside of the classroom anyway.

I can be considered a “late in life” person. I am pursuing a BS in Technical Writing, with about a year to go as I only take two classes per semester. I enjoy learning and plan to learn Sanskrit after I finish this degree, then go back for an MS in Library Sciences or linguistics.

@Jack79 You must be so very proud of your dad. Yes, you really need to want another degree in order to start studying again. Thanks
@perspicacious Did you think your maturity helped you concentrate more on your degree?
@SeventhSense Yes it must be such a sense of achievement when you graduate, but the dreaded student loan hangs round your head for years and years doesn’t it? My daughter graduated in 2004 and she is still paying off her loan.

If I could manage to be a student forever, I would do it. I love being in college. I’m currently 28 and finishing up my BSN. Once I finish this, I will go on for my MSN and maybe even DNP or PhD in Nursing (not sure which yet).

@Seaofclouds Yes student life is wonderful isn’t it? I hope you achieve all your wishes. Thanks for your answer

@partyparty Yes, you do everything better the older you get. :)
