Recommendations for a home storage/media server?

Asked by badapple (198points) May 17th, 2010

Handling HD video has severely limited the amount of space on my hard drive I’ve decided to move up to a home server as opposed to an external hard drive but do not have any expertise in this area.

Suggestions?

I like this. It has a 2 Tb drive, plus hot-swap cage bays for three more drives up to 2Tb each, and 4 USB2 ports. It runs Windows Home Server.

I use a bunch of Seagate BlackArmor NAS 110 2TB for multi-site video surveillance file storage. This should work well with your HD video storage dilema. Checkout the description for features and capabilities.

Check out http://drobo.com – like a RAID on steroids. Multiple redundancy; if a drive fails, pull it out and stick in a new one with no loss of data.

Drobo is firewire or usb, not ethernet. You will have to purchase an additional module in order to network the array.

I’m a big fan of HP’s MediaVault series, they’tr quiet and dont need a top of power. You can also find them on sale quite often for like 40% off, which is awesome.
