What is happening with out passports? (see details)

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) May 17th, 2010 from iPhone

My fiancĂ© and I applied for passports at the same time (on may 3rd). I just checked the status of my application online and it says mine is being processed. I tried looking up his status and it says it can’t be found. It also says it could mean it hasn’t been entered into the system yet but why would that happen if we did them at the same time? We’re freaking out a little bit. We’re taking our honeymoon in 2½ months. They have his birth certificate. What if they lost his application? Any idea what we should do? Wait it out? Keep checking the status and hope for the best? I knew something like this would happen.

Keep checking the status but that is normal. Passports require background checks and other things that will vary the amount of time for each one. If it comes right down to the wire and they lose his application you can start over and expedite it. It will cost a little more but worth it if he makes the honeymoon.

Check with where you applied. Maybe they can help you locate it.

Look up what the expected processing and delivery times are. Wait it out until then. If you still haven’t got them by then, follow up, and complain / reapply as necessary. 2½ mos should be enough for all this.

It usually takes 6 weeks to get a passport back, without paying an expedited fee. Did both of you have a passport before, or is this a new passport for both of you? My daughter got her renewal back in 3 weeks, but her boyfriend still doesn’t have his, and they’re leaving mid June.

@PandoraBoxx Its our first passports. Never had them before. But I guess it’s normal to have them come back at different times? I just figured that if we applied at the same
time, they’d be processed at the same time.

Wait a week and check again. If you didn’t do the expedited application it can take a couple of months. It’s not surprising that two envelopes didn’t get opened and entered into the system at the same time; do you have any idea how many apps those folks get. Plus, it IS the government.

Did you mail everything in the same envelope? When my younger daughter went abroad last year, she got her birth certificate returned in one envelope, and then her passport came 1 week later. Three weeks after that, they returned her old passport.

You could call and speak to a representative and ask them about the likelihood that the paperwork is lost.

@PandoraBoxx We did it via our local post office. So it’s possible that they were sent in different envelopes.

Go talk to the post office. Really.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

@susanc Is there reason for concern?

I would call the office and request a fast track passport. usually this can be done for a few extra bucks. If your travel plans are soon, I would not wait
