Is it rare to see a hummingbird in Alaska?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) May 18th, 2010

My son took me on a fantastic fishing trip to Alaska. we stayed in a cabin, which was located right on the ocean. in front of our cabin was a row of different flowers. one morning, i was up early and waiting for my son to wake up. i was outside the cabin, drinking a cup of coffee, when a hummingbird flew almost in my face. he starred at me for a few seconds and flew away. Question: was this a rare sighting to see a hummingbird in Alaska?

I don’t know how rare they are, but there are a few species of hummingbirds that can be found in Alaska. They probably fly south when food isn’t available, just like they do in other parts of the country.

You might find this article, written by someone who bands hummingbirds in Alaska, interesting.
