Is there a way to use your cell phone on landline phones?

Asked by maggiesmom1 (637points) May 18th, 2010

We’re thinking of eliminating our land line to save money and just use our cell phones. However, I’m worried about not hearing my cell phone ring in our 3 story house. I seem to remember hearing that it’s possible to set things up so when a call comes in on my cell, my cordless phones in the house will ring & can be answered. Am I crazy or is this possible? I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on more gadgets in the house to make it happen (especially since new technology never seems to work for me at first) so if there’s an inexpensive method to do this, I’d love to know about it!

No way this will work. landlines are just that, landlines. they operate similar to cable lines. a cellphone works in a competely different manner. cellphones send their signals to a nearby tower and the tower transmits your conversation to a satelitte. we abandoned our landline two years ago and have never regretted it. we upped our cellphone minutes and this just about evened out the difference. you can make a cellphone call to a landline phone and vice versa, but, this too, involves satelittes and not landlines directly.

Put your cellphone in your pocket and carrying it with you throughout your house. this is why they call a cellphone a “mobile phone”. wife and i consider our cellphones to be like a third arm. it goes where we go.

Okay – I thought I might be crazy. Unfortunately, I never have pockets unless I’m wearing a coat, so that won’t work for me. I’ll have to get a clip or something. It’s just a matter of getting used to taking it wherever I go.

They have all different types of cases for phones nowadays.

Some have clips to attach to belts, others have a neck cord, and others designed for sports or jogging attach via a Velcro armband.

What’s the make and model # of your phone ?

They get mixed reviews, but some seem to really like them.

@buttonstc, I have an iPhone 3G. I’ll have to start searching!

That’s what I have also and you should have no problem finding something to fit your needs.

I have seen examples of each of the three case types I mentioned above.

The world is certainly not lacking for a zillion different types of iPhone cases :)

You might also be interested in checking out review sites such as www.ilounge.com for write ups on popular cases.

I think the most versatile is the Velcro armband type which one could also put around the ankle if at home rather than out jogging.

I’m sure that whatever you find, it will be a whole lot easier on the budget than the other gadgets in those links.

I’d much prefer to spend $20—$30 as opposed to $150+ any day of the week.

Maggiesmom, you are not alone in the pocket department. my wife had the hardest time remembering to take her cellphone with her. she now wears shorts or pants with pockets and her cellphone is right with her all the time. it takes a little bit of adjustment, but once you are use to it, the cellphone is really a convenience over a landline. your home phone is only good at your home. your cellphone is good worldwide. you will love the change. its what the world is coming to, so you have to either join the crowd or be left behind. john
