Best way to organize a yarn monster?

Asked by gemiwing (14718points) May 19th, 2010

I’ve been gifted about 20k yards of yarn- woo hoo!

Now, where the hell do I put all of it? How should I organize it?

We have a reasonably good-sized one bedroom but we’re low on floor space and our walls can’t be drilled into (plaster and lathe construction mostly) so how would you store all this yarn? How would you organize it?

Sell it on ebay.

@perspicacious I love all the yarn and it will be used before the year is up. I knit, crochet, plastic canvas etc so I want to keep it. It’s like having free money.

Use some kind of fabric or net up in the corner of a room to make sort of a hammock to store it in.

Oh wow, that’s brilliant! I’m really jealous. ;)

I’m finding it difficult to picture what that amount of yarn would look like in terms of its volume. How many balls is it?!

For me, the most important thing is that the yarn remains relatively free from dust and other yucky things. Then, I think it’s important to store it in such a way that you don’t have to rummage around and throw everything out onto the floor just to get the one bit of yarn you want!

I don’t have an awful lot and so don’t really need to sort mine, but I store mine in this bag as it is very light, zips up and is sufficiently large (about 60cm on the longest side). Bags like that come in a variety of sizes, and as the bag itself is very lightweight, it doesn’t really add bulk to the storage! It also keeps its rectangular shape, and can be neatly stowed away. They are also very cheap (that one I have is made out of recycled plastic bottles!).

Maybe what you could do is categorise the yarn (perhaps by colour, type or by project and what yarn you think will get used together), and then put it into some sort of zip-up storage bag, that’s a fairly regular or sturdy shape. Just thinking of larger storage solutions, maybe one of those transparent airtight bags that you can use to store large blankets or rarely worn clothes in, then you could slide it under a bed (if your bed is that sort), or store it on top of something (e.g. wardrobes) – you obviously wouldn’t need to stuck all of the air out! If more rigid storage would be better (i.e., something that you can stack up, and needn’t hide away under/on furniture), perhaps try some clear sturdy boxes, like this sort of thing – these are just shoebox sized plastic containers, or you could get something a little bigger, like one of these .

Best of luck finding a good storage solution!

@reverie Oh, gosh, I’d say there’s about thirty skeins and about twenty balls. It’s a lot and I’m so excited! I’ve been rubbing my hands together and looking at patterns for two days now!

I love the container ideas. I wonder if I could make them into a shelf system that can display them. There’s something beautiful about all those colors of yarn stacked together. Probably a good conversation piece too.

Put it in sturdy cardboard boxes, colour code all the yarn, tip the boxes on their sides, so you can see all the colours, and stack the boxes. Then you will be able to see exactly what colours, and how much, of each yarn you have.

perspicacious's avatar

@partyparty I like that idea. I would cover the boxes with fabric too.

@perspicacious Many thanks. I have done a similar thing myself, so I know it works perfectly. (I covered my boxes in bright wallpaper)

my mom has an entire room full of yarn. it is cuhhhrraaazy. so much yarn. anyhow to make them all visible and easy to choose from she has them organized on shelves by color. actually i dont know what theyre called but we have these metal shelving storage box-type things. they’re very simple and she uses each one for each color. so there is a whole “square” of red, for example, and its convenient because since they are stacked up you can see everything and choose very easily. i’m explaining this really poorly, and i’m sorry, but i know what im trying to say but having a hard time articulating, lol. i’ll try to find a picture…

I store my yarn in a cedar chest. It’s safely tucked away, and the moths can’t get to it.

I wish I had a cedar chest like @Primobabe. I have a large plastic crate with some smaller containers and plastic bags inside. I would suggest a number of stackable plastic crates, NOT cardboard, any number of bad things could happen with that (any kind of unexpected water leak, bugs of all sorts, just ick, no). You could organize the plastic bins by color or weight depending on what you’re most likely to be interested when cleaning out your stash.

I’m so jealous! That sounds like an excellent problem to have!!
