Why does the US allow other countries to come to our soil and our territory and take our resources for their own profit (for example British Petroleum)?

Asked by MagicalMystery (900points) May 21st, 2010

what is in it for the US to have another country like the British, for example, come to our soil and our waters and take our oil for their profit?

The same reason why other countries let US companies on their soil to take their resources for their own profit.

We don’t. International Law gives all nations an Exclusive Economic Zone extending 200 nautical miles out from the mean low water mark. The Deepwater Horizon rig was within the US Exclusive Economic Zone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_waters

BP is not another country – it is a corporation operating out of the UK. They primarily became involved in oil production in the U. S. when they bought out several American oil production companies. Anyone who follows the laws of the U.S. and has enough money can buy here.

While you’re learning about foreign investment in the U. S., start worrying about all the foreign business people who are buying up huge amounts of U. S. property, as in this article dated 2008 The Middle East has overtaken the rest of the world to become the largest foreign property investor in North America this year, according to research from the US.

We do, however, seem prone to selling off our infrastructure to other countries, such as toll roads. They do, however, seem to be able to operate them at profit, while keeping them in good repair, something the states they bought them from have trouble doing.

On the other hand, London Bridge is now in Arizona, so I suppose all things even out.

@jaykay Obama’s criticism of BP is annoying. Obama’s public bad mouthing of Iran is infuriating. He needs to learn the art of zip. Rhetoric like this is cheap and pointless, it is sloppy, undisciplined and unhelpful. Anyways what’s the problem? i thought America luv their crude, soon there will be sufficient quantities to surf on :)

@mammal and what exactly is annoying about criticizing a company that just seriously fucked up a huge ecosystem and is responsible for the worst oil spill in human history. Yea thats so0o0o0o annoying to criticize that.

“rhetoric like this is cheap and pointless, it is sloppy, undisciplined and unhelpful” And then you go and do THE SAME FUCKING THING. Talk about the pot callin the kettle black….

If it is as @ETpro says, how even more horrifying that the US does not protect its waters with the most stringent of environmental codes and oversight. The people who issued the environmental waivers are the first, I hope, who will end up in jail over this nightmare. Although of course, that will not undo the damage—we will be fighting this oil spill for decades.

@jaytkay I actually love America, but I don’t think I would be so crazy about the America Rand Paul yearns for, where big corporations are free to do whatever they please even if it bankrupts hundreds of thousands of little companies. Who needs little people. As his namesake, Ayn Rand pointed out, only a tiny handful of the brightest and best connected people produce all the wealth. Workers and small businesses are useless leeches that take money the very wealthy might have for themselves. I mean look at how well HP did after Carly Fiorina got rid of 18,000 leeches and made all the hardware HP sold herself.

I think if the current administration, and administrations before it had put in place laws like they were supposed to for oil and gas companies, regulating the industry and safety issues, etc., instead of turning the other cheek to appease their White House cronies/lobbyists, then disasters like this would not be happening. It’s obvious they have to do something now to ensure it doesn’t happen again (as per Obama’s recent press conference mentioning doing so).

The blame goes all around.
