My SO is out of town and I honestly have a very hard time falling asleep without him beside me. Now instead of gradually getting better… it’s gradually getting significantly worse. This would be fine and all if I didn’t have a life to attend to. What do you do to fall asleep when you’re having trouble??

This actually happens to me a lot. I work nights and so on the weekends and whatnot, I’m always awake at nights. Sleep meds are a life saver. If your not into that, just try to relax, however you do that, and listen to some soothing music untill you drift off.
I really don’t do sleep meds. I wouldn’t be able to wake up for work.
Relaxing doesn’t work so well because of makes me think about how much I miss Nate and how much longer it will be before were both back in Ohio.
Melatonin is great and I need to buy more but it really wouldn’t help at this stage of the game.
I had forgotten about it until now though so thank you so much. It should be helpful for the next week.
If you have a TV in your bedroom, put a movie or something on and stick it on a sleep timer. Your eyes will start to get tired and you’ll fall asleep – then the TV will switch itself off. Job done.
I drink vodka til I wake up the next morning and wonder how i got in my bed
masterbate, or smoke a spliff, or both at the same time
Try re-reading a book (one that you could tolerate re-reading of course). A new one might keep you up further turning the pages to find out what happens. But one you already know the ending to shouldn’t be exciting enough to keep you up longer, yet it will distract you from your SO not being there, and being still while reading should relax you enough to make your eyes droop.
Try some JOGA classes,You will learn how to relax Your body and muscles, when You are in the bed.And the dream will come in 2 minutes.
Great answers, have to love Fluther.
Don’t stay in bed, whatever you do. At least do something productive while you’re being sleepless.
Melatonin is a great suggestion, just make sure you take it early enough.
On the flip side, it’s nice to see someone who is so in love with someone that their absence is so strongly felt, even if it’s not the best of circumstances.
I get on WoW. At least I feel like I’m doing something.
Only go to bed when you are tired.
Get into a routine such as having a milky drink before bed. These activities will be associated with sleep and then should cause drowsiness. (Thank you Pavlov)
Don’t nap during the day. This can make a big difference.
Don’t watch TV or work in your bedroom.
If you can’t get to sleep after 30 mins lying in bed, get up go to another room and do some thing like reading for a short while before trying again.
If you are mising SO while he (she?) ‘s away, you could perhaps try calling them just before bed. Or you try snuggleing in bed with a t-shirt theyve worn. Thier smell might convince your brain they are in bed with you.
Drink some sleepytime tea! Use two tea bags. Its does the trick. Sometimes I can’t even finish the whole cup I’m so tired.
This is very simple, count sheep, it works.
patrick bateman I agree melatonin is natural and I just take 1— 5mg – 30 mins later tired. All natural, melatonin tabs just put more in your system to get tired.
When I’m tired and can’t sleep, I try to distract myself by reading a book and then shutting the light off and imagine someplace I’d rather be. I also find that writing all the stuff that’s stressing me out right before bed can help. It gets my thoughts out of my head, however cheesy that sounds.
I get up and do something that’s put me to sleep when I was tired before, but that won’t keep me awake. For me, reading often works well.
If I can’t get to sleep after 30 mins. I make myself get up. It’s the strangest thing, often that simple act makes me feel sleepy. Then I make some Lotus tea and surf the web. But I don’t let myself do anything really interesting, like Fluther here. No, I do really exciting stuff like search for cases for my iPhone. It always lulls me to sleep. Sometimes it works a little too well, in fact. I have to be careful that I don’t fall asleep at the computer as one time I did and my head went forward and I broke my nose when it hit the table!!!
Drink alot of milk and plus if you get alot of workout for the day so you would pass out easy.
I agree that making a list of all the stuff you have running through your head can help
but that’s for another kind of can’t-sleep – the kind where you have racing thoughts.
If you drink milk, warm it up – cold milk doesn’t work, chemically. Putting some rum or bourbon in it will help too. Do not have a brownie or a nice cookie with it, because of the caffeine and the sugar. Have a banana. THEN masturbate. Have the sweaty sweetie’s shirt handy.
There is a homeopathic called “Insomnia” made by a company called Hyland. I’m
shocked by how effective it is. No hangover.
If all else fails, get into your clothes and go somewhere where there is grass and walk around in your bare feet for five minutes, no matter how cold it is outside. This makes you happy to get back to that lonesome bed. Then do all the other stuff.
Good luck.
eat a big meal b4 bed. U will gain weight but sleep good.
@susanc. “THEN masturbate” great stuff
Drink warm milk, when you heat milk it creates a natural sedative. Also try valerian root. The roman’s used it, and its what valium is made from. It has an odd smell, but you’ll be sleeping quickly so its no matter.
Susan C is right on on the Highland’s stuff. They also make one called Calms which is what I use and its also good for anxiety…...
Also, if its thoughts I do like to write down the to-dos so I don’t forget, but if its random thinking then I say to myself “all of this can wait until tomorrow”
I like to hear some music.
Pop more Melatonin and either read til I can’t keep my eyes open anymore or watch an old flick on TV.
I imagine myself getting out of bed and walking outside. I try and get as far as possible before I pass out.
