Unless you’re downloading music that’s in the public domain, then downloading any song using any method or program without paying for that song is illegal.
You can use, say, iTunes. Or Amazon.
The only exception would be is if the artist is giving it away, like Nine Inch Nails did for one of their albums.
Any of the peer to peer sites are illegal because you are getting the music without paying for it. Basically, the person that you downloaded it from did not have the legal right to reproduce the music and you are then pirating the music. If you had limewire and deleted it, the stuff you downloaded should still be saved on your computer (though you might want to check the directory they are saved in). As long as it’s not connected to limewire, the music will stay. As far as getting arrested, it just depends on if you get caught.
@XoXoDIExOxO Pay for Limewire? No. It’s a free program that works off the Gnutella P2P network.
Did you pay for Limewire?
I dont have it…I was thinking of getting it, but one of my friends did in fact, pay for limewire.
I’ve also heard bad things about people being able to get into other files on your computer through some of the P2P sites. From my understanding, it depends on which files you set up to share with everyone else on the network. I’d be very cautious if you are considering any of the P2P sites.
Well then what are some other places I can download music that ARENT illlegal. oh ans, nobody I know shares music.
So you CAN get arrested for downloading the music, or is it just if you share it?
like @mrentropy said iTunes and Amazon. You can always check the artist’s actual page as well.
@XoXoDIExOxO You can get arrested for downloading it. I haven’t heard of it happening lately, but it did happen a while back. They tracked people through their IP address and filed charges for downloading and sharing copyrighted music. I remember hearing about people being ordered to pay money because of it.
My best friend is gonna get arrested if we dont stop him/her RIGHT now!
If I recall correctly, they were sued for SHARING the music not for downloading it.
In essence, they were distributing stolen property if I understood correctly what I read about it at the time.
Here is a story that talks a little about someone that was arrested for downloading music (it’s from 2005). Basically, the people downloading the music are pirating it and can be charged with copyright infringement.
@SOC.
Thanks for that link.
That is really Draconian. No small wonder people are ticked off at the industry.
I’m sure she would have little trouble proving her computer illiteracy in the matter or that her husband was the one doing the downloading. Its ridiculous for them to go after her. Why not go after the husband?
@Buttonstc I agree. I’m guessing it has more to do with who has possession of the songs and the equipment that was used to get it. If I remember correctly, all of this really started back in like 1999 or 2000 with Napster and Metallica.
@Buttonstc Once they found out she did not download the music they should have made her delete the files. To punish her for something she did not do is an act of pure evil.
Music you say? I thought limewire was for perverts to exchange kiddie porn back and forth. Hmmn.
so it doesnt matter if you pay for it or not…none the less its pirating?
