Is it safe for travelers to go to Jamaica?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) May 24th, 2010

Jamaica is now in a turmoil. over the weekend, drug criminals converged on Jamaica with high-powered weapons, to defend their drug leader, Christoper Coke. Coke is wanted in the U.S. for cocaine trafficking and selling illegal weapons. the drug criminals are defending Coke’s extradition to the U.S. on the outstanding warrants by attacking Jamaican police officers. Question: is it safe now or will it ever be safe again, for travelers to visit Jamaica? would you take the chance?

Warden Message from the US Consulate in Jamaica. Current as of 21 May 2010. Hope this helps.

No. Also, this is what US prohibition has done to the Americas.

Yes, it is certainly just as safe as the U.S. in the other areas of Jamaica, even during this time of unrest. This current issue seems to be focussed in the Kingston area only.
So, avoiding flights into the Kingston area would be wise.
Why would it never be safe again, because of the current Coke situation?

The safe areas for travelers are in the Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, and Negril areas.

It’s safer for Americans to go to Jamaica than it is to go to Detroit.

(Probably safer to go to Afghanistan, too.)

It’s not safe in the ivory Coast as well. Been browsing the state dept. travel warnings.

India is also scary now.

Seems every female I have know that has gone to Jamaica has been man handled by the locals.

This might not be a good time to visit Jamaica if you are going to have business in Kingston itself. But the rest of the island – it is the largest of the British WI islands – appears to be as usual. Which is to say, take the same precautions you would elsewhere.

BTW, the US Embassy published an advisory on Trinidad & Tobago, which had a general election today. It told US citizens to be aware of their surroundings and to remember that certain colours are associated with particular parties, etc.
