Can you get/feel drunk from Klonopin?

Asked by ava (985points) May 25th, 2010

I have Narcolepsy and was just prescribed Klonopin to help me get better sleep. I have never drank or been drunk in my entire life (despite the fact that I am 31), but I feel like this is what it must feel like to be drunk. I don’t even know if I can make it to the bed to fall asleep. And I can’t stop laughing. Just wondering.

Klonopin can affect people like this. I wouldn’t equate it to being drunk- more like extremely tired and a bit loopy, like me with NyQuil.

Be sure and read the medical information sheet that came with the medication. It can be very useful. If you didn’t get one, look at this article under it’s generic name clonazepam.

I have taken 2mg HS Clonopin for chronic insomnia (does not react to any other med… they have all been tried) for years.

I do not get a high feeling from it but some do. I got a high feeling from Ativan though, which is also a benzo like Clonopin (had it prescribed a couple times in the 80’s). I would think that benzo highs are similar and the “walking on clouds” and happy feeling I got from Ativan did not feel like being drunk. Being drunk affects your motor skills.. benzos do not that I have seen.

I think the high side effect of benzos are mostly similar. However, they usually just knock you out.

Do not plan to drive anywhere for a solid 12 hours after Clonopin until you know what it is going to do. It is a 12 hour medication.

Oh I forgot something. When you take your Clonopin, you shall, most likely, not feel its effects for 15–30 minutes (it takes me an hour). However, just in case you do feel them faster and Clonopin puts you to sleep quicker, go to bed immediately after swallowing the pill. If you have any strange side effects like sleep walking (Ambien, another benzo, does that to me… I cannot take it) call your doctor before taking another dose.

The motor skills deficit from alcohol is different than falling asleep. Alcohol will remove control of your muscles (and inhibitions, and much more).

If your side effects bother you, please call your doctor. I do not know a single doctor who would be bothered by such a call. Doctors are very careful with benzos and for very good reason.

Any benzodiazepine (synthetic or not) can make you feel this way.

I heard an interesting definition of a related medication (also a benzodiazepine) once.

“Valium is basically just powdered alcohol.”

At least that was his experience. Your mileage may vary.

I almost hate to post this, but I will.

My insomnia is so bad, that it’s taking (4) 10mg valium, 2mg klonopin and 2mg xanax (bars) each, as well as (4) 2mg ativan, (2) 5mg mogadon (Nitrezapam) and (2) 7.5mg zopiclone. That’s TWENTY PILLS A NIGHT. I have discussed this at detail with my doctor, but he will only prescribe paxil (an antidepressant) for nervousness (the quack). It does nothing for the insomnia or the depression/anxiety for that matter. I have had to resort to buying pills online. The Zafa klonopin from Pakistan is terrific, and everything else I get works the same as at CVS, etc. It took years to get to this stage, and I’ve been trying to find a doctor who will prescribe me chloral hydrate, as it’s one of the only things I haven’t tried, it’s one of the oldest sleeping meds, extremely potent from what I hear and I’d prefer to be on one medication than six (taken with grapefruit juice as I’ve heard it intensifies benzos). I’ve asked for barbiturates (Pheno/Secobarbital) in the past with a dirty look as an “answer”. I just want to find a doctor who will prescribe chloral hydrate so I can stop ordering $500 of meds overseas each month. And I haven’t found CH overseas anywhere.
