Do you have a very proud moment with your dog/cat that you would like to share with everyone?

Asked by BoBo1946 (15325points) May 26th, 2010

A few years ago, we had a parade for the Fourth of July. We dressed up Spunky (my baby is deseased now) and she lead the parade. The next morning her picture was on the front page of the local paper. I’ve enclosed a pic of her.

Would like to share a moment with your dog/cat etc. that you will never forget?

I am proud of my Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Zara all the time. I love taking her out for walks and showing her off to everyone. Of course I love all my animals but I am particularly proud of her as I feel she is an exceptional example of her breed. Her personality is wonderful, she loves people and fully expects people to love her. She can be quite bouncy and excitable but she completely changes around children. She will be calm, gentle and just let them stroke her. We got her from Battersea Dogs Home where she had been since being found as a stray in London. I firmly believe that she is sorely missed by her previous owners as I can’t imagine that anyone would abandon such a delightful creature. I had no intention of getting another dog before she came along but it was definately a case of love at first sight. If anyone has any reservations about Bull Terriers they should come and spend some time with Zara.

@Leanne1986 she is adorable…those come along once in a lifetime. Spunky was a stray also…....At the time we found her, we had some rental property and she came up one day..skinny, hair matted, etc…she would show off by jumping on a wooden fence around the property on walk on it…loll…..the first year, we must have taken her to the vet half dozen times….but, what a find. A diamond in the rough….she was a true lady! miss her SO much.

I am proud of my old guy Rags (short for Ragged Old Man).

I took him off the streets some 3 years ago, him almost dead from starvation and Feline Infectious Anemia . FIA destroys the appetite and he was nearly toothless, needing a dental to remove more destroyed teeth when he was strong enough. He was, we later found out, about 15 years old. To give an indication of how ill he was, the vet told us (my wife and I) to not take him to the vet until we could get some weight on him because one of the muscles that atrophies in extreme emaciation is the heart. A visit to the vet would have killed him from stress.

When we got him to the vet he weighed less than 4 pounds, the vet’s prognosis for him being poor. The vets (it is a clinic) always are astounded at how good he looks and his health, including a heart condition, is getting steadily better. He only has three teeth (one fang), blind in one eye, etc., but he is doing great. Now we weighs a good 9½ lbs. Just surviving, going from a guy who looked like this (I took that pic because I thought he was going to die that night, then wrapped him back up) to this shows that he is a tough old bugger.

Oh another thing that I should not be proud of but I am. We moved in with Keysha’s sister temporarily while Rags was recovering, weighing in at about 7 pounds (still very ill), and he terrorized her sister’s 16 pound, 8 year old, fully healthy cat. He did it just with attitude. The one time the fur flew it was orange (her sister’s cat). I am certain that this cat has PTRD (Post Traumatic Rags Disorder). Yes, I would put Rags in our bedroom so her sister’s cat could come out from wherever he was hiding.

We now live with another of her sisters who has a 4 year old cat. With attitude, yet again, Rags is fully dominant. They get along and play though. It is great to see my 18 year old drop years in just a few months as these two play like kittens.

@Arisztid

Awww….what a great happy ending for Rags! :-)

I am proud of my old cat Gadwicke right now. He is 14 and is showing his age and has a thyroid condition that is ramping up. I just introduced a new 10 mos. old girl kitty 2 weeks ago and he is really smitten with her!

In less than 2 weeks he has gone from pissy and hissy to washing her face and they now run to greet each other every morning. ( He gets my room at night and she has her own bedroom so he doesn’t have to ‘share’ his bedtime throne. lol )

I think ’ Mia’ is going to be ( is ) proving to very good for him. Of course a young and highly seductive female does have ‘power’. hahaha

She’s got the seductive girl thing down pat and he is very interested in watching her every move.

I couldn’t have picked a better blend for him and am so happy that taking this risk is working out so well!

@Arisztid wow…thank you for people that care about animals. That was a very special story…a tear dropped from my eyes to see her so healthy from where she once was….gosh, have always thought, despite what some religious people say, our animals will be in heaven when we arrive. Thank you again!

I am very proud of my puppy Penny.Well she’s nine month old now but we still refer to her as a puppy. When out on walks she used to run after other dogs wanting to play.Trouble was she would follow them & their owners & I would have to chase her & put on her lead. Now she still wants to play & approaches other dogs to say hello but she knows to come when told. Also only yesterday while on a walk she sat without her lead on at the side of the road patiently waiting for me to cross at the right time.Might not seem like much but a big step for the Penster. She so cute & adorable me love her very much (turns to mush)

Arisztid's avatar

@Coloma Thankyou. :) We took him in just to give him a good place to die and people who loved him. Well, that was 3 years ago. :) I am happy that your new kitten is helping Gadwicke… it is amazing how a youngster can bring life to old folks.

@BoBo1946 Thankyou much. :) He keeps looking better. He has a heart condition and slightly wonky kidney values and both have improved since we took him in.

BoBo1946's avatar

@Coloma LOLL..from hissy and pissy to washing her face! Dang, that was worth more than money can ever buy anyone. Those moments are so special.

BoBo1946's avatar

@Arisztid super…have a good one my old friend from AB!

BoBo1946's avatar

@ucme A mush…it is nice to be a mush! Penny is now a millionaire! That is pretty good interest into today’s market!

My cat, Wicket, was dumped on the side of the road outside a family friend’s home when she was 8 weeks old. She was terrified of people, but took a liking to me as soon as I met her. She still had issues of strangers and would hide, but now (as long as they don’t startle her) she’s fine with my friends or my roommates’ friends coming over to hang out. Also, she’s figured out how to open doors. Even that weird folding door kind on closets.

Coloma's avatar

@BoBo1946 Yes they are. :-)

I am also very proud of my little female chinese goose ‘Sonora’ ( named after the town she was rescued in )

When I lost my old granny goose Babby 2 summers ago her ‘husband’ Marwyn ( my goosedog ) was lonely even though he is imprinted on me. I went in search of a new girl goose and found a waterfowl rescue about 75 miles from my house in the southern Sierras.

They had a younger female about 3 yrs. old that had been pulled out of a lake with a fish hook in her eye. She lost the eye but made a full recovery from the nasty infection.

Poor little thing, terrified and completely unsocialized to people.

She has made tremendous progress this last year.

Knows her name, comes in the house with Marwyn for bread, loves her swimming pool and all the good food, is very upset and won’t leave me alone when I come home from traveling.

Her favorite thing is when I tell her ’ greens!’ and every night I float a huge salad in her big water tub. oh the JOY of that floating salad bar! lol

She’s such a sweetheart and it goes to show, with enough love and patience even a very unlikely animal will blossom! It makes me happy every day to see her so happy and healthy now enjoying a great goosey life on my little micro-farm! :-)

BoBo1946's avatar

@SheWasAll_ good for you…Wicket (love the name) is one lucky cool cat…thank you for sharing!

BoBo1946's avatar

@Coloma wow…you are the ultimate animal lover…that was a really cool story. Sonara has a beautiful name. And, what a blessing for you…seeing her happy. What many people don’t realize, by the laws of chance, we are who we are…in reality, one of those animals with a hook in their eye, could be one of us…thank God for people that care!

Coloma's avatar

I love my little little furry & feathered family!

Here’s Sonora ( in my avatar ) the 1st week home turning on to the floating salad bar that is the highlight of her life! ;-)

Dr_Dredd's avatar

Let’s see… where do I even start?

First, there’s my puppy Minnie. She’s 8 months old and just loves people. When she catches sight of someone she doesn’t know, she goes to them and starts wagging her tail so hard that her entire rear end wiggles! The other night, she was so cute that a group of random people wanted to take her picture. She “struck a pose” and was darling. (I could just “hear” her thinking, “I’m ready for my close-up.”) :-)

Then, there’s my other family dog, Max. He’s 3 now, but when he was a puppy he was a complete maniac. He never sat still, he nipped and jumped, and was a general nuisance. One day, though, I was having a particularly bad day and came home and started crying. Then he was a perfect gentleman, just sitting at my feet and looking up at me gently. He’s very in tune with our family’s moods.

BoBo1946's avatar

@Dr_Dredd wow…and some people have no clue how perceptive animals are (Max showing empathy for your bad day)...

..on this particular day, my ex now, was combing Spunky’s hair…kind of rough like..and Spunky showed her agitation, but she kept brushing her roughly…and all of sudden, Spunky made a VERY low growling sound…and all in the same moment, Spunky put her arms around my ex’s face and kissed her face continually…now, that was special.

poofandmook's avatar

I am obviously proud of my Poof. I love Mookie, but the Poof is my heart. I’m astounded by her smarts every day… how she responds instantly to me calling her, the way she greets me when I come in and we have our little “kissy head” routine… the way that no matter where she was previously, when she hears me go into the bathroom, she’s always lying down outside the door waiting patiently for me to pet her. The way her meows sound like screams, the way she snuggles between my legs when I’m sleeping, the way she sucks on her paw/arm when she’s happy, the way she plays fetch, etc. etc. etc. That cat is graceful, smart, and such a diva… and she LOVES! HER! MAMA! lol

BoBo1946's avatar

@poofandmook loll loves her mama…that was a cool story! Thanks!

Everyday is a proud moment with my little calico cat. She worships the ground I walk on and is very loyal to me. And everyday she lays on my bedside table and watches me, waiting for me to wake up. When I speak to her, she responds with a head nod and a happy little “mrrrow!”

BoBo1946's avatar

@xRIPxTHEREVx wow….go Chico! Thank you for sharing Chico with us!

One weekend, I came home from college expecting to say goodbye to my 16-year-old cat Pickle, who has diabetes and was not doing very well—he hadn’t been eating and was having fairly frequent seizures. We were going to have a vet come to the house and put him down, but my family and I made the decision to give him more time; he just didn’t seem ready to go yet. It has been over two months since then and he’s only had two seizures. He’s still happy and loving and has spent every morning on my bed with me since I got home for the summer. I’m proud of the resilience he has shown in spite of his illness, and thankful for every day that I get to spend with him.

BoBo1946's avatar

@ParaParaYukiko yes yes….treasure those moments. Spunky’s health started down hill about year prior to her death. We spent a lot of quality time together. She was always with me. Miss her SO MUCH!

I am extremely proud of my fluffball kitty Chewbacca. He’d been with us for about a year when we brought home a tiny ball of nothing. The little kitten (we named her Yoda) was only 6 weeks old and she was the runt. Imagine having this large fluffy male cat, and introducing him to this eensy weensy ball of black fluff with huge blue eyes. She was barely bigger than his toy mice.

He was surprisingly gentle with her and even bathed her frequently. It’s been almost a year since we brought Yoda home and now, Chewy amazes me every night with his behavior. They have dry food available at all times, but I give them wet food in the evenings. They are both fed at the same time and Chewy is such a gentleman that he will take about 2 or 3 bites of his food, then move away and watch Yoda eat until she is finished. When Yoda walks away from the bowls, only then does my precious Chewy settle in to his dinner.

I often put out another can of food right before I go to bed, just in case he didn’t get enough after the wee one chowed down! I love both my kitties to pieces, but I just adore my darling little gentleman.

BoBo1946's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate ...Chewbacca!!!!!!!!...now, that is a great name! Thank you for sharing Chewbacca with us. And, is Yoda an offspring of Chewbacca?...did not guite understand your comments!

loll..Milo is a cutie!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@BoBo1946 No, we got Chewbacca as a stray from a neighbor then a friend of ours had a mama cat with kittens and begged me to take one. Had to stick with the Star Wars theme, so we named her Yoda.

I don’t know how to post pics here, but Chewbacca is a long-haired tuxedo cat, black furbaby with white boots, a white chest and a devlish white Hitler mustache. He’s the most beautiful cat I’ve ever seen.

BoBo1946's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate oh my gosh, sounds adorable! Again, love that name!

@BoBo1946 Yeah, he’s my big fluffy darling. I love when he cuddles with me at night and purrs me to sleep.

poofandmook's avatar

isn’t it the best when they purr and put their little noses right up to your ear, sniffing? Gives me the shivers! :D

loll…see you folks later!

Loving these sharings!

Just got home and let the geezers out to eat all the dewy raincoated grass, they are happily milling around the yard making little mewling sounds because spring grass is sooooo delicious! My dandelion eaters are the worlds best natural weeders, and they fertilize as they go. lol

BoBo1946's avatar

@YARNLADY loll…cute! Thank for sharing!

Last night my new kitty got out in the garage after dark and oh boy!

The great mysteries of a moonlit night in the country were just too much!

Grabbed a flashlight and took off after her.

She scampered up the hill from the driveway to the yard and ran up a tree, then down and all over in the moonlight, to the goose corral, scratching her claws on the fence post, then back up the driveway and up another tree and stood on a big limb just out of reach over my head finely tuned to the night sounds.

Then down again and across the yard and back into the garage and up the stairs into the house. lol

She wasn’t in a panic, just playing. I am proud that she is adjusting so well and while she will not be allowed out at night without supervision I don’t believe she has any intention of running away, just so much to explore.

Her morning outing is coming up now. :-)

As soon as I got her back in

sakura's avatar

@BoBo1946 I haven’t the foggiest idea what breed he is. We bought him from an animal shelter but he is blooming cute : I’ll put him on my picture for a while so you can see him :)

BoBo1946's avatar

@sakura hey, he is cute…looks very inquistive!

sakura's avatar

He was watching a line of ants crawling over a wall, it was so funny to se him do this, he wouldn’t move for ages!!

gailcalled's avatar

@Colomal You were lucky to have been able to 1) spot the kitty, 2) tail her and 3) herd her back into the garage.

When Milo sneaks out at night, he cats around in some ur-world and then returns at 5:30 AM.
