How can I diagnose the optical input on my speakers?

I’ve got a pair of Behringer MS40 monitors. The analog input works fine, but using optical in from either MacBook or Airport Express produces no sound.

-You have a switch to select OPTICAL or COAXIAL on the back of monitor
-Make sure that Your Mac has ENABLED Optical Output (I’m not a Mac user,jet) on sound card.Just play some song,connect a cable to Mac,and look at other the end of the cable (unpluged),if it has a RED-LASER light (BE CAREFUL not direct in the eyes!!).
