Do baby snapping turtles bite?

Asked by fightfightfight (601points) May 26th, 2010

I was wondering, because I just got a baby snapping turtle this afternoon and I wanted to pick him up but I didn’t because I wasn’t sure if he bites or not…he’s really small, only a few inches.

Yes, and wash your hands after handling them.

They are a carrier of several nasty parasites. Wear gloves and wash after handling. Also check your local game laws. Snapping turtles are considered an endangered or threatened animal in many areas, and having one in your possession can lead to fines and/or jail time.

Yes but generally they are not that bad but like mentioned you need to be careful of parasites and bacteria. I had one as a boy and I remember scrubbing him with a toothbrush. Probably not the best thing for a wild one but I had the cleanest little snapper. I used to feed him chopped meat and live gold fish. He was like a cute baby dinosaur. Eventually I released him.

Yup. They start out biting, pretty much anything that moves.

Yeah, just pick him up from the back and wash your hands afterwards.

Be aware of the claws too. They can leave some nasty scratches.

What kind of snapping turtle and where is it from. A baby alligator snapping turtle from where I live can take off a piece of your finger. Sometimes people think they have a snapping turtle and it’s just a little box turtle. Box turtles look like snapping turtles and will bite but not as aggressively as an alligator snapper.
