I think it’s pretty well put into layman’s terms on there. The pill suppresses ovulation (discharge of an egg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ovulation) process by manipulating the endocrine system (hormones). Hormones control many different processes in the human body, so manipulating them can cause various different effects.
According to Malcom Gladwell, in the chapter of What the Dog Saw on the subject, the pill makes a woman’s body think it is pregnant by releasing some or the other horomone. Based on this, he goes on to look at the cultural and health impact of the pill. It’s a good read.
What the Dog Saw
I’m probably not the best person to answer, but from what people told me I gather that it basically puts the part that makes the eggs to sleep. So it doesn’t make any more and until the person stops taking it. Then it wakes up and starts making one.
I could be wrong. Maybe it was over simplified when that person explained it to me.
It puts ur overies to sleep so they think ur pregnant, a hormoan is released to do so… but if u miss 1 pill then they wake up twice as much making it more likely u will become pregnant… hence my pregnancy lol…. so be carefull to use them correctly xx good luck x
