Doing a bit of family research tonight. Some people are confused as to whether my great grandmother was Cherokee or something they’re calling “Black Dutch”.
Can someone please explain this to me? (Very interesting that they can’t tell the difference.)

“The term “Black Dutch could mean several different things in terms of racial ethnicity. But from a practical standpoint, it was a polite term to cover up undesirable native ancestry. ”
I hope this isn’t true. This is rather disgusting.
Black Dutch means a number of different groups in Genealogy research. Check out this link. This one connects to a Yahoo group for Black Dutch descendants to help solve relationship issues (very different in genealogy than real life when you are trying to figure out which John Smith is the father of whom. Or maybe not so different, eh?)
I am a member of a yahoo group for my particular group (Huguenots) and, because we are all descendants of the same guy, I keep meeting cousins from all over the place. It is a really cool tool to help with genealogy.

Call me nuts, but the term “Black Dutch” brings to my mind people who are Dutch and incidentally also black.
If “black dutch” means you are a black man in the Netherlands, then you are a fucked dutchman. I guess.
