What is it that Fluther looks for when choosing new moderators?
I’m very curious. Over the past few years, I’ve paid close attention to the new mods when they appear and I can’t seem to find any one or two qualities they have in common, other than them not being overly snarky or controversial jellies. It doesn’t seem to be length of time on this site, as at least one mod appears to have been around less than a year.
Anyone care to enlighten me?

~ @ChazMaz Is totally right. We chose Markyy and Sarcasm for eye-candy in the office. ;)
From just a mod perspective and not a “hiring” view I can tell you that you are correct- each of us is different and have their own style. Also each of has experience in different areas of life. We are a diverse crowd but all are warm, honest and genuine people who are fun to work with.
As for a proper answer I will leave that to Augustlan our headmistress.
Ooooh, headmistress! Is it fantasy day at the office?
@syz Yes, didn’t you get the memo? :D
The all value the importance and resonance of interpetive dance.
Big schlong and/or perky boobs.
@cprevite: I do not have perky boobs, but my bosom is ample. Perhaps this is why they chose me. :P
I all seriousness, I asked this very question and I was told that when they are looking for new moderators, they generally look for people who flag questions and quips well and who tend to show an even temper. It took me a few years to be asked as I have only developed an even temper. ;)
Silence! The headmistress will speak now!
Ahem. In all seriousness, what we look for pretty much conforms to @KatawaGrey‘s answer. Level-headed, even-keeled, fair-minded. A site regular (not necessarily a long-time member, but one who is on the site often). Someone who will complement the current group of mods (notice I said complement not compliment :P ), since we like to have a well-rounded team. Sometimes we further narrow the search to those in certain time-zones, too.
We get our suggestions from member recommendations, current mods, and people who nominate themselves. So, feel free to suggest someone (including yourself) if you think they’d be good at the job! When we need to add new mods, Andrew and I then discuss all of the options and decide who we’d like to ask to join us. Then, the hazing begins.

@augustlan: So that’s why my computer has been having issues!
Oh the hazing…. That is the best part!
