Do you think the oil spill in the Gulf will eventually kill all the algea in the ocean, causing no new oxygen to be released, and the eventual extinction of all life on earth in a few months?
After all, the ocean is where most of earth’s oxygen is created.

I have no idea if it will cause human extinction within a few months but it will have a severe effect on human health, marine life, and our water supply. The well has no predetermined amount of oil within it so who knows how much more will be released into the sea. Eventually, not from the oil leak alone, humans will be extinct. We are getting there closer each day with new historic disasters.
No. The well will be capped before all of the oceans are affected.
No.
A) The world’s oceans are vast. While the spill in the Gulf of Mexico will have severe environmental impacts, it simply does not have the capability to spread and affect all of the world’s oceans (and associated algae).
B) Marine algae does provide a majority of the Earth’s oxygen, but there are other major sources: freshwater algae, cyanobacteria, and terrestrial plants.
I didn’t until you brought it up. Shit, now I’m going to be up all night. lol
I am more worried about the extra cost on our economy if gulf coast fishing is wiped out. Also the unemployment and insurance costs.
@Silhouette – Sorry! But if it helps any, I’d be willing to comfort and hold you all night long :-)
Okay, let’s hear from someone a little less pessimistic and who’s had a little less caffeine?
There’s been some postulation by a Russian media source (FWIW) about the chemical dispersant that is being used becoming part of the clouds and rain that will eventually pour over the eastern US (and toxify food and soil). Even as a conspiracy nut, I find this a little farfetched, but there is certainly room for plausibility given the facts that the chemical is somehow exempt from government oversight and that BP ignored the EPA directive to stop using it.
One little spill – ha! All it will do is ruin the Gulf Coast economy and make the recovery from the current world wide depression even slower.
When it gets bad enough some bacterium that can eat it will evolve.
Oh wait, I see they already have Unfortunatetly they make CO2. Trees will get a little healthier.
No. The ocean is huge.
Why would you even think that’s possible?
