What is better for you, biking or running?

Asked by camfashion (5points) June 1st, 2010

I ask this, because I have asthma and when I run I have an asthma attack. But if I bike I am fine.

I prefer both, I still have a young, virile body. I just don’t like lifting weights.

If those are my only two choices, biking. But I prefer walking.

Well in your case it sounds like biking is better for you.

Sounds like biking is the thing for you…....???

I like both but I’m in the process of having shin splints treated and biking is my only option right now.

Running uses more muscles and gives more of your body a work out.

Riding a bike is far less strenuous and impact based, so it does far less damage to your body in the long term.

Swimming, is hidden option #3 that is the best for you.

@tedd is right. Running is a more strenuous activity, but people who do lots of running over a period of years are more likely to have joint problems due to the impact of hitting the ground with each step. Biking removes this impact, but it works fewer muscles so you need to bike harder in order to get the same workout. I prefer biking, because I get too winded too quickly when I run, whereas I can last a lot longer (and go much farther!) when on a bike.

Swimming is great. Works pretty much every muscle in the body without hurting your joints!

One point about cycling if you’re a boy – if the seat is in the wrong position you risk causing damage to yout testicles on long bike rides.

I find that I’m much more able to sustain a long ride than a long run. I think this is because biking allows for mini-rest periods – I can pause my pedaling for a split second and I think this helps keep me from getting too winded. Maybe this is tied to your asthma trigger?

For you Biking. It varies with the fitness level and medical conditions of the individual. Swimming would also be my choice, if the chemicals in the local pools don’t exasperate your asthma.

with running you can lose a lot more calories that biking
However with bking you will tone up your legs and build muscles in no time
either of the two is great:)

Running really helped with my overall physique. My belly got smaller, legs stronger, arms toned, and butt lifted. I don’t know why it worked that way for me but it just did rather than bicycling. My legs were nice and toned but my belly was floppy. Muffin Top… I don’t exercise too much now but when it was on the regular those were the results.

i multi-workout and do both. i run first. take a break and then ride for 5 miles. not a triathalon, but oh do you feel and see the results. takes about 90 minutes to do both. i’m 46 and i just call it my personal biathalon without the swimming part.
