Help! What was the name of that movie that Steve Martin played in, where he raised a little girl, who turned out to be the daughter of someone rich and influential?

It had that one scene in it where he used his balloon invention to snatch her off the edge of the quarry?

I’ve made it a goal to read all of the books that will be assigned reading for our students at different times. I just finished “Silas Marner…” and I’ll bet that Steve Martin movie was totally inspired by “Silas Marner,” which was written in 1861. I’d like to get the movie to show after the student has read the book.

I also get to read “The Odyssey” again, and I’d like to get the movie “O Brother Where Art Thou,” as a fun follow up to the book.

And, seein’ as we’re talking about Steve Martin, I just see putting this Q in the “General” section! Do with this question what you will! :) Except tell me the name of the movie first.

Thank you! Ya, the movie is identical to the book, right down to the main character getting his gold stolen, and then found several years later when they drained the quarry and found the body of the man who stole his money. I thought it would make a nice modern tie in to the book.

Apocalypse Now was also based on the Odyssey.

@filmfann I’m pretty sure Apocalypse Now was based on Heart of Darkness and O Brother Where Art Thous was based on the* Odyssey*

@janbb Yes, it was also based on Heart of Darkness, but also the Odyssey, according to screenwriter John Milius.

@filmfann I didn’t know that – interesting.

@filmfann I guess I need to see Apocalypse Now again to see the comparisons. It’s easy to see in O Brother Where Art Thou

Try to find the Complete Dossier version. It has an expanded cut, and deleted scenes that are easily traceable to the Odyssey.
The playboy bunnys are the sirens. The french camp is the land of the dead. Deleted scenes include a great scene that combines Ulysses tied to the mast, and the men turned into animals.
