Is there any way to get utilities turned on on Friday morning instead of waiting the following Monday?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) June 4th, 2010

I’ve called and called the utility company, requesting service to be turned on in my name, but they refuse to come out or do whatever it is they do to turn the power on. I just bought a new condo but they tell me it’s not an emergency. They can’t do anything until after the weekend.

I even told them a sob story about my elderly mom coming for a visit and that she was very sick but they didn’t budge.

It’s a hundred sweltering degrees outside and you could literally pass out from no air conditiong in that kind of heat. The only option I have is to check into a hotel until Monday and hope they turn power on then.

Has anyone been through this and is there a reason why they refuse to help me? Don’t I have some kind of rights?

The power should be on anyway. Just use it. Consider it a freebie.

I think the power IS on, but somehow the bank turned it off and I think all someone has to do is flip a switch somewhere, but I don’t have access to it.

Call the bank or your broker and ask if they can help.

I’ve called my realtor several times and she doesn’t seem to know anything more than I do. I’ll call the bank that owned it and see what they can do. Thanks.

You will probably not get a satisfactory response. The motel is probably your best bet.

Unless there is a local utilities commission. Then you could call and ask them.

If you call the utilities “after hours” and tell them it was supposed to be on and you must have someone come out, they just might. Of course they may also charge you to do it, but then it would be on.

I get the feeling that utilities have a definite set of rules that they go by and that it is hard to get them to deviate. I remember moving into an apartment one time and having the power go off because the previous tenants had moved out and then later having the power go back on.

@lostinparadise…this is the same thing’s that’s happened to me. whenever I went to look at the place, the power was always on, but after closing and stepping inside, it was off. no one told us it was going to be turned off.

hopefully the power will be turned back on soon. thanks for all your answers. I’m sure it’ll be straightened out. :)

Thanks everyone. My power is now on, no thanks to the power company.
