Should I listen to the officer, or drive on my street? details inside?
I live in an apartment a medium sized city, on a smallish, mostly commercial block. I woke up this morning and took my dog out.
When I got to the street, I saw thousands of walkers doing a walk for a well-known organization. They’re taking up the whole road, and sidewalks too.
I saw an officer directing car traffic away from my road and asked when the walk would be over. He said in two hours. I asked about the possibility of getting my car out of the garage, and he told me I can’t until the street was cleared in about two hours. There were no signs posted, neither about the road being closed today or about the walk. The officer said that’s just part of living in the city, and get used to it. I have 3 appointments I need to get to this morning.
So… what’s the legal and moral issues here? Do I slowly make my way through the people (it’s about 1 city block until a turn away from the people) or suck it up and miss my appointments that I scheduled a long time ago.
I realize there are bigger issues in the world, I’m just wondering what y’all would do.

Well, I would Definitely take the risk and drive this once only, try getting permission from the officer. That should do, because if the appointments are crucial then you must attend them. Besides, if it’s crowded then the chance of him not noticing is high!
I would ask the officer to hold up the walkers for a minute while you move your car. Explain that you have these appointments.
How nice you live in a place where so many walkers do something like this.
i would call the mayor’s office and complain!
@BoBo1946 Being pissed off and making a mental list of people to complain to was my first reaction for sure! But I decided to take a deep breath and ask you people first. :)
@filmfan- I agree, it is nice. Would be nicer with some signs up yesterday though!
By the way, it’s an hour later and the streets are cleared. I’m still wondering what you guys would do though.
I would try to get my car out.
I would get in my car and drive out of there like I would any other day like you said, “There were no signs posted, neither about the road being closed today or about the walk.” If the ~helpful officer~ gives you a ticket fight it out with the mayor, the traffic court and the officers supervisor.
If people are nice enough to do the walk, then surely they are nice enough, and smart enough to not want to get run over, to hold up a second while you back/pull you’re car from the garage. I’m sure if you did get a citation for driving in the middle of the walk that you could fight it and win.
@Likeradar got’cha….no need to get pissed off!!! .you can be nice when you call the mayor office. That is what they are there for…it appears the officer is being unreasonable and the mayor’s office would probably agree!
Stick a large pillow under a loosely fitting dress, hold your face over a burner until it’s nice and reddened, lightly mist your face and hairline with water and then get in your car and drive.
If you are stopped by the officer pant and hiss “I’m in labor, hee, hee, hee, swoosh”.
That should get you through the human jam in no time. Although you could end up with a police escort :)
Next time don’t ask.
Sometimes it is easer to ask for forgiveness than to ask permission.
I would have wanted to get my car out anyway, but I probably wouldn’t do it. I’d be too afraid I’d hit one of the walkers!
People move. Unless there is an official roadblock (which I’m certain would require notifying any residents well ahead of time, as well as a public notice) they can get the poo out of your way.
I’d try to get the car out, go to the appointments, and then trade the car for this. Problem permanently solved.
I would listen to the officer; I’m not big on going against what people have told me to do. The appointments are a tricky issue, but I bet there would be a way to make them anyway, given enough determination. You could call a friend to pick you up somewhere away from the walkers and bring you to the appointments (bake them cookies for their trouble). Is it too far to walk/bike? What about calling a taxi? Maybe a combination if it is too much to ask a friend to bring you to them all, too much for a taxi, and too far to walk to some subset of the appointments.
I would explain my predicament and ask the officer for an escort out.
In regard to the walkers, everytime i attend a college football game…i have watch for the walkers. If i take your time, not a problem! Don’t understand the officers motives here. Maybe, he/she was in a bad mood…
