And if so do you think America will turn this around any time soon?

The US will soon fall behind if we rely on dwindling foregn and domestic oil supplies for our energy needs.
China will soon be the world leader in wind, solar and bio-fuels. Both in power production and building the hardware. It is already the leading producer of wind turbines; new installations in the US are using Chinese turbines.
If the US doesn’t step up, we will squander our resources in a string of wars like we have in Iraq, fighting over the last drops of easily extracted petroleum.
The US has to drastically ramp up wind, solar, biofuel and nuclear energy production if we want to remain a first world country.
I agree with @johnpowell about their national economy.
Having been there and met more than a few locals, it’s safe to say our personal economics are (mostly) in better shape.
What we need to do is stop being a consumer nation and once again a producing nation or else I do believe we will be left in the dust. Also as @jaytkay stated we need to move away from the whole oil industry and become a leader globally in alternative fuel and energy. There’s so much we could do, we could for example research and develop technology to make geothermal power more efficient and economical, which as a energy source trumps all other forms of energy. But yes wind, solar, bio fuels, even tidal energy and hydroelectric could be our way as a sustainable and producing nation. I’ve always said that if we put our noses to the grindstone we could maybe not be the leader in making mass production of “trinkets” and “stuff” but in something that matters much more. When we fully understand these resources and ween ourselves off of oil the possibilities could be endless. I’m sure it would open up doors for new thoughts and inventions. Then maybe we could get out of this financial situation we are in and once again be the leading nation we once were, but instead of planes, trains, and automobiles, which were so 20th century. We could lead in renewable and sustaining resources, which to me seems more fitting for the 21st century.
I don’t think that we’ll turn around, though I think that some of our shrapnel will bounce upwards on impact.
As for China, they manage to outpace us in every endeavor they set their mind to, so I have no doubt that they will combine all of the flaws of corrupt Communist with all of the flaws of Western Capitalism and achieve total ruin before we do.
@jerv You make an excellent point——whatever they set their mind to, they almost always accomplish it. It’s the Chinese (Asian) work ethic. I am Asian (Chinese/Japanese) ethnically, but I was born here. However, I was raised with the Asian work ethic “You will not cease working hard until your dreams have been realized”.
The Chinese have miraculously transformed their nation into an economic powerhouse. Only 20 years ago, when I visited China, most of the people there were still riding bicycles and using donkeys for transport. When I went back there last year, I was amazed to see nearly every city folk driving a car, and not just ordinary cars, but BMWs, Mercedes Benzs, Lexus, and Porches. I even saw quite a few Rolls Royces! The Chinese are enamored with luxury and modernity. Nothing is good enough for them. They unashamedly use capitalism for their own devices, and are now wallowing in the riches. I know one girl from China who lives here in Canada, and her parents send her $30,000— $40,000 U.S. EVERY MONTH. Unreal. Sigh.
I won’t answer the question directly.
The richer China becomes, the better it will be for Americans. I look forward to what they can invent, what human creativity can produce. The more minds working will allow the whole world to grow faster. It will be amazing if they can invent some new biofuel or fusion or whatnot. And we will all benefit, unless it some crazy new weapon of course.
The freakish Capitalist/Communist Chimera is a social time bomb, how can you have a small percentage enjoying unimaginable wealth? Cheek by jowell with a massive populace, mostly poor (by western standards), who cannot democratically protest in the street for fear of extermination. That isn’t a recipe for long term prosperity.
@mammal Look at the rights corporations have here in the US and the “Free Speech zones” that kept dissenters blocks away from anyplace where Bush-43 and a camera might come together and I think that we are not as far away from that here as you might think.
That the Chinese continue to purchase U.S. treasuries leads me to think of three possibilities: a) they are attempting to keep America afloat as a market for their goods (loss of this market leading to unemployment and unrest), b) American adventurism in Asia actually suits them, keeping Islamic nations in check, or c) a combination of these two.
You only have to look to the Suez Crisis for what can happen when a debtor nation’s chief creditor disapproves strongly of a foreign adventure they have undertaken.
i’m surprised a 2000+ year old country is copying a 200 year old failing country.
Name 5 Chinese inventions of the years 1990 – 2010.
Name 5 Chinese brands with global brand recognition.
Name 5 American inventions of the years 1990 – 2010.
Name 5 American brands with global brand recognition.

Then answer the question about superiority.
