How many space shuttle failures have there been in United States History?
I am writing an essay on the disadvantages of space travel.
It seems as though the massive amounts of money(in my opinion) that go toward space travel could be better used for someting else. I belive investing in cleaner energy resorces would be a start!
I know that because of the bill Obama passed there will not be much space exploration going on anyway, but this information would still be greatly apreshiated.

You can find a whole section on the Shuttle Accidents in this excellent criticism of the Space Shuttle wikipedia article.
I was thinking about this the other day. It occurred to me that eventually with such a complex system, there comes a time when you have to start the countdown or it will never launch. For the first time I truly began to think of Astronauts as courageous. They’re strapped to a very sophisticated machine, and there has only been so much time and so many monkeys to tinker with it, but the show must go on!
@gailcalled If you don’t, I will. Go girl, I’ve got your back. This is the social section dangit, we’re allowed!
@Trillian: Why is this question not in “general”? It’s about writing an essay on a worthy subject. And, to be fair, it was well-written, with that one excepshun.
@gailcalled . . . perhaps i should leev the to of you alone.
@gailcalled I don’t know how that works. I keep seeing questions in the General section that simply beg to be savaged but I have to leave them alone. This is clearly a homework question, so I think I should just give the answer.
42.
@gailcalled . . . it appears you have a great deal of intrest in that.
Two crews lost. Challenger was done in by a bad fuel seal, while Columbia had issues with the heat tiles.
There is more to the space program than just the shuttles, of course. The history of spaceflight is marred with many tragedies and many more near misses, without even counting the unmanned stuff or R&D.
Despite all that, I think that trying to get into space is a worthwhile goal. It gives us something to aim for, firstly. And somewhere to go when we inevitably hit population saturation. And for the greenies, the amount of energy streaming off the sun in our general direction is nothing short of absurd.
The specific answer to your question is easy enough to find. I just wanted to recommend that people go see the IMAX movie Hubble 3D if at all possible. If 3-D isn’t available near you, at least check out the 2-D version
@Nullo thank you for some actually good information, as oposed to most of the peoples “answers”.
