Why does my intact dog have a boner all day long? (NSFW, I guess...)

My intact dog walks around the house with a boner all day long. What gives?

Because dogs like bones?

@stemnyjones
What is an intact dog?

Silhouette's avatar

@rebbel He still has his dangly bits.

Those dangly bits will get you in trouble every time.

Maybe he got into your Cialis. They do caution again 4 hour erections.

Have you been feeding him Viagra? Is there a dog in heat nearby? Are you having a period?

That’s one of the many drawbacks of having an intact dog. And there’s probably a female in heat somewhere within a few miles of you. Just wait until he starts hiking his leg on your belongings to mark his territory. Lovely.

Why not get him fixed? Problem solved.

anartist's avatar

Why not get him bred [if he is a an AKA breed]

stemnyjones's avatar

@Buttonstc Waiting to be able to afford it. :P

@anartist Because there’s already a problem with overpopulation with domestic pets. ...And he’s a big ole mutt.

@stemnyjones if he’s never gonna get any and it was never in the plans, why did your leave him intact when it’s such a source of misery and frustration?

Most communities have a variety of low or no-cost spay neuter options.

When I first moved here I had no idea where to find them as I did in Philly. When I got my new cat, I did two things.

Of course, I Googled the phrase “low income spay neuter” along with my zipcode.

Secondly I put up a post in the pet adoption section section of the local Craigslist asking for that along with recos for good vets.

Then I just spent an afternoon on the phone calling each lead. To my great surprise, there was one option for a local S/N clinic held once a month for a donation of $20.

Yup, that’s only one zero instead of the normal vet charge in the hundreds. Definitely worth an afternoon of my time.

And in Philly, there was a shelter which offered vouchers for only $40 along with a list of participating vets who would accept if as full payment.

Plus, I had a female cat which is normally far more expensive than a male dog.

But it doesn’t matter where you live. There are usually several groups dedicated to providing affordable S/N to prevent pet overpopulation.

The one I used was listed on a National site divided up by regions. So that’s why I prefer the double approach of Google as well as local CL.

I’m sure you can find am affordable alternative. It just takes a little persistence and flexibility in scheduling.

I would have preferred a voucher system similar to what I used in Philly since you can choose a vet yourself. But evidently that’s not available here. Spay days are the usual around here but I sure couldn’t argue with the price.

I know that in some places they use mobile vans which have full operating facilities and schedule different neighborhoods on a rotating basis. Very convenient. Wish they had that here.

But anyhow, with a little scouting and research I’m sure you can find something affordable for you. Good luck.

Of you have further Qs PM me.

@anartist I just adopted him a couple of months ago, and because he doesn’t spray in the house or cause any problems with the other neighborhood dogs, I’ve left him intact while I use my money for more worthy causes, such as buying a safer crib for my child, and getting his rabies shot and heartworm prevention and flea treatment. You know, things that REALLY matter. ;D

@Buttonstc Thanks for the information. I will definitely look for some low cost options in my area.
