How much did the Abby S adventure/stunt cost?

Asked by LuckyGuy (43880points) June 12th, 2010

Thankfully, she was rescued without putting anyone else in danger. Let’s ignore that cost for a minute. In the news just now her father, Laurence Sunderland, said “her boat is adrift and will now likely be sunk because of the difficulty towing it a great distance.” Who pays for that? Insurance? What do you think the boat cost? How much was all the ancillary support?
Whatever her father does for a living it must pay well.

According to an article from April of 2009, when her 17 year old brother, Zac, did the same thing, their dad is a shipwright. I suspect the taxpayers are paying for it.

It makes all warm and fuzzy to know I might have paid a little for that stunt. Not.

When individuals take risks such as sailing, flying, hiking, etc. then I believe they should also take responsibility and pay the costs of any rescues. Is it really of any important public interest who’s the youngest this-and-that or the latest and greatest solo daredevil? It’s not enough for me to want to pay for any of it.
