General Question

Back to the gall bladder. My relative has four tiny incisions; one of them is weeping. It has been 4 days since the surgery. Is that normal?

Asked by gailcalled (54647points) June 13th, 2010

He is an impatient guy. However, he is not running a fever, and there is no redness, heat or swelling around the site. He still has the steri-strips, but keeps worrying them with his fingers. He is upset about the weeping. I need info to reassure him until he can call the nurse tomorrow. Any ideas?

It is normal for it to weep.

It isn’t normal or healthy for him to keep playing with the incisions.

I hope he doesn’t make you put a cone on him!

@Merriment: Thanks for the reassurances. I believe that the surgeon also removed his sense of humor, so I will share your remarks with only his wife.

I saw a mother duct tape oven mitts on her kid who wouldn’t stop scratching her chickenpox.

Sorry… I don’t know a proper answer to your question. It seems icky. I hope he feels better soon.

If it is greenish pus he might need some antibiotics. Maybe Keflex?? Can’t remember if that is right. Did a doc or nurse look at it?

This is still Sunday and thus no docs or nurses available. The fluid is clear with a little tinge ofblood…very likely lymphatic fluid with some blood traces from the surgery. There is no fever, no signs of infection at the site, but the patient is—what is more severe than “very grumpy”?

This, of course, is the opinion of one who has NOT been to med. school. His wife may run him to see the nurse after discussing it on the phone tomorrow. Patient is very impatient and wants a quick fix for everything.

That type of drainage is normal and expected. That is why they don’t suture it totally shut, they want it to drain. If you can get him to leave the area alone it will likely heal normally and with no infection.

In this context I think “pain in the caregivers ass” is the next step up from “very grumpy”!

As for the “quick fix”, they didn’t happen to give him any narcotic pain meds did they?

Couple of those in a nice cuppa tea and it should fix things. Regardless of whether he or his long suffering wife drinks it!
